  • Way We Were: More entries from blacksmith’s ledger

    J.D. Milton ran a blacksmith shop in Avenstoke in the early 1900s.
    After his wife died, he raised two boys and a girl.
    One of his sons, Millard Milton, became the postmaster at Avenstoke. The train that traveled through would pick up the mailbag from a hook on a post near the tracks, just like you see in the old westerns.
    J.D. Milton’s grandson and Millard’s son, Curtis Milton, was raised in Avenstoke. He brought in an old ledger a while back that came from his grandfather’s blacksmith shop.

    Oct. 4, 1962
    Installation of new officers of the Broken Arrow Archery Club was held at a dinner meeting at Mrs. Allen’s Tea Room. Winners of the recent championship shoot were also announced.
    Shoot winners were: free style — Bill Sayre, Mrs. Bill Sayre; instinctive — women’s division, Mrs. Wilda Bond; men’s division, Jesse Duncan; junior boys — Larry Sayre; cubs — Kathy Sayre.

  • Way We Were: Local girl nominated to McCall’s board

    50 YEARS AGO
    Sept. 27, 1962
    Charles Allen Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Paul Perry of Chaplin, underwent the removal of wisdom teeth in St. Matthews.

    H.G. McRay showed in the jersey cattle division at the Alexandria Fair in Campbell County and came home with several awards.

  • Way We Were: New building dedicated at Van Buren

    Sept. 20, 1962
    A dedication of the new building and a homecoming was held at the Van Buren Baptist Church.
    The Rev. Lewis Searcy, pastor of the Verona Baptist church and former pastor at Van Buren, delivered the sermon. Assisting in the dedication was the Rev. Paul Clubb, Shepherdsville, also a former pastor.
    The new concrete block building containing a sanctuary and approximately 10 classrooms was begun in 1958. The church was organized in 1950 and met several years in the old Van Buren schoolhouse.

  • Way We Were: Brothers not seeking head butts

    Sept. 13, 1962
    Mountjoy’s Crown Jewel placed first in the American Saddle Horse Breeders Futurity of Kentucky at the State Fair, winning $1,463.63.
    The winning entry formerly owned and shown by Billy Mountjoy was sold in July to Blue Lake Stables of Newbury, Ohio. Mountjoy had nine weanlings out of the 134 nominated for the event, but showed only three.

  • Way We Were: Hunter gets 'Wright' skunked

    Sept. 6, 1962
    Early one Friday morning, Dale Wright went hunting with his father and they separated to look for squirrels.
    Before he knew what was happening, a skunk ran out from under Dale’s feet, took a foot-hold about 10 feet away and atomized him from head to foot with a poor man’s Chanel No. 5.
    The anesthetized hunter, his enthusiasm watered down considerably, peeled off and discarded his clothes, took his watch, billfold and gun and headed back to the car and home for a soapcloroxspicnspanmrclean bath.

  • Way We Were: Alton Ruritan field dedicated

    Aug. 30, 1962
    H.G. McRay and Billy Bob Smith exhibited prized Jersey and Holstein cattle in the Larue County Fair at Hodgenville.
    McRay won first on his Jersey junior calf, second on senior calf, junior yearling and senior yearling and the junior championship.
    Smith won first on his junior Holstein calf and his senior yearling, third on this senior calf and junior championship.

    The Wonderful World of The Brothers Grimm was on at the new Rialto Cinema Theater in Louisville.

  • Way We Were: Freaky corn, flowers appear at News office

    Aug. 23, 1962
    Mrs. E.B. Sparrow was the winner in the Home Economics division at the Anderson County Fair and her sister Mrs. Elvin Burgin was the runner-up.
    Mrs. Sparrow had a total of 69 points on entries in clothing, craft, canning, antiques and foods.
