Hanks, senior warden; Major Wheat, junior warden; Cecil Cinnamon, senior deacon; Thomas Cotton, junior deacon; E.A. Brown, secretary; W. J. Smith, treasurer; Hollie Warford, tyler, Clarice Ray Sparrow, senior steward; J.R. Cox Jr., junior steward; Edward Watts, chaplain; and Joe Bertram, degree team captain.

  • Way We Were: Demise of tobacco farming exaggerated

    DEC. 21, 1961
    Nancy Brown was chosen “Miss Congeniality” from one six classes at the Fugazzi Business School in Lexington following a style and modeling show in which she participated in Monday night.
    She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Romie Brown of Sinai.

    Two 1-pound boxes of Domino Brown Sugar was 29 cents at A&P Supermarkets. Turkeys, 20-24 pounds, were 27 cents a pound.

    New officers at the Alton Ruritan Club were: Tom Cotton, president; Cecil Cinnamon, vice president; P.H. Crutcher Jr., secretary; Allen Herndon, treasurer; and Urbane Wilson, director.

    Sadie Sea, 17, was named Co-ed correspondent for the 1961-62 school year, according to an announcement by Margaret Hauser, editor of “Co-Ed Magazine.”

  • Way We Were: Moffett in livestock judging contest

    Nov. 30, 1961
    Jerry Carlton received the Optimist Club Trophy as the most valuable senior football player. His fellow players chose him.

    Edgar Franklin returned home from the Frankfort hospital where he had been a patient for several days. He had suffered a crushed disc of the back and two broken ribs in a fall.

    Ann Ripy, senior at Western Kentucky State College, was selected for Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
    She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Ripy Jr.

  • Way We Were: Trusty is world champion preacher boy

    Sept. 28, 1961
    Bruce Springate, member of the 100th division, was to leave for Fort Chaffee, Ark.
    He graduated from Eastern State College the year before and received his commission of Second Lieutenant and spent six months at Fort Knox.
    Springate had planned to enter Eastern again in the fall to work on his Master’s Degree, teach part time at Model High in Richmond and to assist coach Paul McBrayer in coaching.  
    He played basketball at Eastern four years. He is a son of Mrs. Rebecca Springate of Fairview.

    Sept. 21, 1961
    Jimmy Phillips, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy J. Phillips, was pictured holding 4-pound bass.
    The youngster caught the monster fish out of the McKee pond. Jimmy, who was fishing with his father who didn’t get a single bite, used an artificial night crawler to hook his catch.

    Wyatt Shely was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel.

    Jams Silas Stratton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Obed Stratton, accepted a teaching position with Lloyd High School at Erlanger.

    Votes were cast by 2,597 voters on a sunny but cold election day.
    Winning magistrate races were: Elmo Bruner, Democrat of the fourth district, beat out Everett Kays, Independent; and Elbert Stinnett defeated E.L. Shouse, Republican, as magistrate of the fifth district.
    Unopposed were: James C. Hanks, first district; Arvin W. Crask, second district; Stanley Burge, third district; all Democrats, and Walter Drury, Republican, sixth district.

  • Way We Were: Fallout shelter booklets to be mailed

    Nov. 2, 1961
    Captain J. Gilbert Franklin, native of Anderson County, retired from the US Navy after 28 years of service.

    Fallout shelter booklets were to be put in every mailbox in the nation.
    According to a national magazine, the 106-page booklet would contain tips on fall shelters.

    Christy Ann Stratton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stratton, celebrated her fifth birthday with a party at her home Thursday afternoon.

  • Way We Were: Western 7th graders visit Capitol

    50 YEARS AGO
    Oct. 16, 1961
    Hamilton Tingle of Alton Station brought some blooms from a lilac tree in his yard to The Anderson News.
    He said this was the second time in the past six years that he had lived there that the tree had bloomed in the spring and fall.

    George Fallis Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. George Fallis, underwent a shoulder operation at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington for an old baseball injury.
