  • Way We Were: Big Crowd Attends Water Ballet at Pool

    The first water show held at the pool drew a crowd of more than 500 and more than $250 was cleared for the installation of tennis courts, according to pool manager, Charles Grote, who was in charge of the show.
    Mrs. C.T. Ward, superintendent of schools, did the make-up for the performers. Hugh Brooks was the announcer and Allen Carter and Jimmy Hawkins handled the lighting effects for the show.

  • Way We Were: Johnson and Murphy win pageant

    Carolyn Casey called recently to correct some information that ran under  the photo of the dairy calf demonstration Aug. 3.
    Carolyn says David Flynn was actually Wayne Flynn and James Flynn should have been listed as Ray Flynn.
    Thanks, Carolyn, for correcting that 50-year-old mistake.

    A special section of the paper reported the words from the kid’s point of view.

    Adelia “Deede” Huddleston, 3, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Huddleston had a new baby brother and her aunt, Mrs. Sherman Sims, took her to the hospital nursery to see him.

  • Way we were: Williams hitchhiked to Florence (Italy)

    August 10, 1961
    Bobby Satterly, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Satterly, suffered an injury to his right eye when he was struck by a ball while trying out Thursday morning in Versailles at the Pittsburg Pirates camp.
    He hit a home run the first time at bat and the second time up he was struck. Eight stitches were required to close the deep cut above the eye. He was admitted to Versailles Hospital and then taken to a specialist in Lexington.

  • Way We Were: Real Kentucky burgoo served at Alton restaurant

    August 3, 1961
    Fifty-one cars of a 175-car Southern Railway freight train were derailed about 2:30 last Thursday afternoon near the Avenstoke crossing.
    A number of rails were broken and damaged, as well as severe damage to the cars and contents. No one was injured.
    Cause of the derailment was unknown.

    Johnny Cook, 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Cook, fell from his bicycle Monday and sustained a deep cut of the right knee. Six stitches were required to close the wound.

    Can anybody tell me where the old Samples Graveyard is near Anderson City Road?
    Shirley Casey of Crittenden, Ky. is looking for her great-grandfather’s grave. His name was Elijah Mansford Lacefield and he died in 1906.
    Also I got a request a while back about a McMichael Cemetery. I had gotten the folks some info on that one but they didn’t think it was the one they were looking for.

    July 20,1961
    Pleasant Hill Christian Church was destroyed by fire at 5:30 p.m. July 19.
    Several residents heard when lightning struck but did not know what was hit. Charles Burgin immediately went in his car to see if the church had been struck but didn’t see any evidence so he returned to his home for supper. A short time later he looked in the direction of the church and saw the entire building in flames.
    Lightning struck in a gable and was burning in the loft.

  • Way we were: Poor eyesight didn’t stop Brown from goal

    Mrs. Amos Baxter suffered a severely cut hand requiring six stitches to close the wound.
    Her husband was carrying a stone jar from the cellar, when a step broke causing him to fall on Mrs. Baxter, who was below him on the stairs. It is believed Mrs. Baxter’s hand was cut on a piece of the broken jar.
    Mr. Baxter suffered a slight injury to his back.

  • The Way We Were: Winner of the match was clear as mud

    July 6, 1961
    Andrew Bird, Anderson County’s new school superintendent, was given the oath of office. Former superintendent Mrs. C.T. Ward and former Director of Pupil Personnel Ezra Sparrow were presented gifts in ceremonies at the superintendent’s office later that afternoon.

    Clusters of small tomato-like fruit appeared in a patch of Irish Cobbler potato vines in the garden of Marion Peach on Court Street.
    Peach said very few potatoes were in the patch. A cluster of the tomatoes was placed in the News window.
