    Girl Scout Troop 733 will hold sign-ups Saturday, Sept. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Park, the group announced.

  • The Anderson News launches inaugural burgoo cook-off

    Some use old granddad’s secret recipe. Others simply toss whatever edible items they have into the pot and let them stew.
    There’s no shortage of ways to make burgoo, but come Saturday, Oct. 1, one version will be proclaimed the best.
    The Anderson News, in cooperation with the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, city of Lawrenceburg and Anderson County Tourism Authority, will sponsor its inaugural Burgoo Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., tentatively on the Lawrenceburg Green.

  • St. Lawrence parishioners meet Pope in Spain

    Nine parishioners from St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceburg attended World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain on Aug. 21.
    World Youth Day is one of the largest youth gatherings in the world with nearly 1.5 million pilgrims from 193 countries in Madrid on Aug. 21.  It was founded by Pope John Paul II and has been carried on every two years by the current pope, Pope Benedict XVI.  
    Youth are invited to a carefully selected city that could be anywhere across the globe.

  • Horse show to benefit 4-H Club

    The Saddles N Spurs 4-H Club will sponsor the September horse show at the Waddy Ruritan Grounds, the club announced in a news release.
    The show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 17.
    Proceeds from the show will benefit the club.
    All classes will pay back for first through third places.

  • Bourbon, wine tasting event will benefit historical society

    A bourbon and wine tasting fundraiser will be held at Dowling Hall on Sept. 24 from 6:30-9 p.m. to benefit the Society for the Historic Preservation of the city of Lawrenceburg.
    The cociety was formed, according to a press release, to provide practical and financial support to the owners of historic buildings within the city of Lawrenceburg who are seeking to preserve and maintain the historic character of such buildings and to aid in the overall historic preservation of the community.

  • Tony’s BBQ Barn to serve burgoo at state festival

    They needed burgoo, and it didn’t take them long to find out where to find it.
    The organizers of the Kentucky Bluegrass Music Festival in Louisville knew that adding burgoo to the festival’s lineup would give it a kick, but first they needed to find a renowned purveyor of the hodge-podge of a stew.
    “We were watching a KET documentary on burgoo while considering adding it to the festival,” said Matt Willinger of Bisig Impact Group in Louisville, the event’s organizer.

  • Truck tug raises more than $8,000 for girl, 2, battling cancer

    More than 600 people attended last Saturday’s Truck Tug at the Anderson County park to raise money for Ryleigh McKinney, a 2-year-old battling a rare form of childhood liver cancer.
    The event raised more than $8,000 for Ryleigh’s family and featured raffles, donated concession food and, of course, the truck tug.
    “We were all amazed at the turnout,” Melanie Wiley of Kentucky Truck Tuggers said.
    Thirty-two trucks of all different classes participated in the event at the county park.
