  • Extension offers pesticide training

    Applicator pesticide training classes are scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m., the Anderson County Extension Service announced.
    By law anyone using chemicals classified as restricted use must have a valid private applicator certification card, according to the news release.
    The only way to keep this card current is to attend pesticide update training on proper use and handling.
    Proper use and handling safety of agriculture chemicals makes both economic and personal health sense.

  • Distinguished Young Women orientation to be held Sunday

    Orientation for the 2014 Anderson County Distinguished Young Women program will be held Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at Sand Spring Baptist Church, located at 1616 Harrodsburg Road in Lawrenceburg.
    The Distinguished Young Women program, formerly known as Junior Miss, is open to all current high school junior girls who reside in Anderson County.
    Parents are encouraged to attend with their daughters.

  • Anderson Library offers March classes

    The Anderson County Library will offer the following free classes in March.
    All classes are subject to cancellation, and class space is limited to five students. Students will use the library’s laptops.

    Heirloom Seed Workshop
    When: March 2
    Time: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Seating is limited, so call to reserve a spot.
    Introduction to Computers
    When: March 14, 10-11:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m.; March 28, 10-11:30 a.m.

  • Historical society to meet

    The Anderson County Historical Society will meet Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Public Library.
    The monthly meeting will focus on the series of books “The Rivers of America,” which was started in 1937 and ended in 1974.
    William S. Bryant, Ph.D., will discuss this series of books, especially those dealing with Kentucky.
    Other historical series of books of interest to Kentuckians and collectors will also be mentioned.
    The meeting is free and open to the public.

  • Extension to host ‘Festival of Foods’

    The Anderson County Extension Homemakers will sponsor “The Festival of Foods” on March 19 at 6 p.m., with all proceeds going to support a scholarship for an Anderson County student who majors in family and consumer sciences or agriculture.  
    “Join us for a fun night of food from Australia, Germany and Guatemala,” event organizers said in a press release. “Learn about their country and culture.”  
    Tickets are $5 each, and children 4 years old and under are free.

  • Frankfort Regional offers new approach to hip replacement

    Frankfort Regional Medical Center orthopedic surgeon, Joseph Dobner, MD, now offers patients requiring hip replacement surgery a new approach with a specially designed hana table the hospital recently purchased, the hospital announced in a news release.
    The hana table is a specially designed surgical table that allows for hyperextension, adduction and external rotation of the hip to an extent not possible with conventional tables.
    While utilizing the table, Dobner is able to replace the hip without detachment of the muscles or tendons from the hip or thigh bones.

  • Lessons in etiquette

    Registration is now open for the newly created Lawrenceburg Junior Cotillion, “an opportunity for modern day teens to take time out of their busy lives to learn social skills and build character by practicing good, Southern manners,” according to event organizers.
    Participation in the Lawrenceburg Junior Cotillion is open to any sixth through eighth grade public, private or home schooled student. Youth from outside Anderson County are also welcome to register.

  • Rice receives service award in NYC ceremony

    Pam Rice, vice president of Anderson County American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34, recently received a 2013 Lewis Hine Award for Service to Children and Youth in awards presentation held in New York City.
    Rice was honored by the National Child Labor Committee’s award on Jan. 28 for her social activism for the Anderson County American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34, addressing the needs of military children and families and for promoting veterans awareness, according to the press release.

  • Sisters honored for humanitarian efforts

    Lawrenceburg sisters Lauren and Madison Wash have had plenty of thrills while competing in beauty pageants, but getting to meet the governor recently certainly ranks among the best.
    The sisters received citations from the Kentucky House of Representatives in honor of their humanitarian work and met Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Abramson in the process.
    “It was a pretty exciting day for them,” said their mother, Adrienne Wash. “It was an honor to see the girls on the floor of the House and Senate.”
