  • Tony’s BBQ Barn to serve burgoo at state festival

    They needed burgoo, and it didn’t take them long to find out where to find it.
    The organizers of the Kentucky Bluegrass Music Festival in Louisville knew that adding burgoo to the festival’s lineup would give it a kick, but first they needed to find a renowned purveyor of the hodge-podge of a stew.
    “We were watching a KET documentary on burgoo while considering adding it to the festival,” said Matt Willinger of Bisig Impact Group in Louisville, the event’s organizer.

  • Truck tug raises more than $8,000 for girl, 2, battling cancer

    More than 600 people attended last Saturday’s Truck Tug at the Anderson County park to raise money for Ryleigh McKinney, a 2-year-old battling a rare form of childhood liver cancer.
    The event raised more than $8,000 for Ryleigh’s family and featured raffles, donated concession food and, of course, the truck tug.
    “We were all amazed at the turnout,” Melanie Wiley of Kentucky Truck Tuggers said.
    Thirty-two trucks of all different classes participated in the event at the county park.

  • American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34 hosts Poker Run Sept. 3

    The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34 will host its fourth annual 100-mile poker run Sept. 3 for the Kentucky Healing Field.
    Poker hands will cost $10, and extra cards are $5 with a limit of two.
    The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Kentucky Healing Field located in Lawrenceburg, was the first and only permanent Healing Field ever constructed in the U.S. The Healing Field honors all Kentucky soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan and brings healing to their families.

  • Ruritans plan fish fry

    The Alton Ruritan Club will host its annual Labor Day fish fry on Sept. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m., the club announced.
    The meal will include fish, hush puppies, fries, cole slaw, baked beans, dessert and drink. Hot dogs will be available for children.
    Cost is $8.
    The club is located on Alton Station Road.
    Entertainment will be provided by Back in Time, with David Perkins, Rich Hanks and others doing karaoke.

  • After school yoga offered at Anderson County High School

    An after-school yoga program is being offered on Tuesdays between Aug. 30 and Oct. 4, Anderson Community Education announced.
    It will be held in the high school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and is for those 13 and older.
    Cost is $39 for six weeks. The instructor is Harmonie Field.

  • Six indicted by Anderson County Grand Jury

    The following people were indicted Aug. 16 by the Anderson County Grand Jury, according to information obtained at the Anderson County Courthouse.
    Ronald C. Spivey, 27, was indicted on two charges: second-degree burglary; and theft by unlawful taking.
    Brian K. Daniels, 28, of 1161 Baxter Ridge Road, was indicted on two charges: two counts of theft by unlawful taking.

  • Autism fundraiser is Saturday

    Izzy Jennings had a wish — to give.
    Now she’ll see that wish in action during Abby’s Wish on Aug. 27, a fundraiser to find a cure for autism.
    Izzy, 9, told mom Beth Jennings that she wanted to make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House and Autism Speaks. She chose Ronald McDonald House because her family had stayed there when her younger sister Abby was born.
    Abby, 7, has Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning type of autism.
