  • ‘Mimi’ a true inspiration, comforter and teacher for fifth grader

    I am nominating my mimi, Kathy Waggner, for the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the year essay contest. I think she deserves this title for many reason. As you read you may see what I mean.
    My mimi is very special to me because my dad passed away when I was one and she is the only person I have left on his side of the family. She is always there to talk to me and comfort me when I am missing him and feeling down because I don’t get a chance to know or meet him. That is one reason my mimi is special to me.

  • Help the hungry by filling soup bowls at Ward Elementary

    Emma B. Ward Elementary will be hosting the fifth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser and Holiday Station Express on Dec. 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
    The Empty Bowls fundraiser, held in the Ward gym, provides soup, bread and handmade ceramic bowls to benefit hunger charities such as Backpack Buddies, Open Hands food pantry and Heifer International.
    Students from Ward, Anderson County Middle School and Robert B. Turner Elementary created the ceramic bowls, which will be available for sale at the dinner.

  • Ward writers compete to see who has the best grandparents

    Students in instructor Lisa Hudson’s fifth grade reading and writing class at Emma B. Ward Elementary completed essays for a writing contest. Students had to write an essay for the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year essay contest and explain why their grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year. The overall winner of the contest was Emily Slone. Her essay will move on to the next level of the contest, according to Hudson. The other essays were chosen as runners up.

  • Middle school club sponsors book drive

    The Anderson County Middle School BETA Club will collect books in its Books for Christmas Angels service learning project Dec. 10-14.
    The BETA Club will accept any new book or “like new” used book that week. Books will be distributed to the Salvation Army to go along with Christmas Angels.
    If you wish to make a book donation, please drop them off at the Anderson Middle School or the Adult Learning Center at 219 East Woodford St.

    Students accept EKU scholarships
    Hundreds of incoming freshmen and transfer students have accepted merit-based scholarships to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
    Local recipients include Deanna Baxter, Anderson County High School, Lawrenceburg, Presidential Scholarship; Lauren Welsh, Anderson County High School, Lawrenceburg, Founders Scholarship; and Shelby Taylor, Anderson County High School, Lawrenceburg, Regents Scholarship.
