  • Transportation Cabinet offering scholarships for engineering-tech students

    The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will award up to 30 new scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year for students pursuing civil engineering and civil engineering technology degrees.
    As many as 20 competitively awarded scholarships for the civil engineering program will be awarded for students to attend the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University or Kentucky State University.

  • Seventh grader spells her way to first victory

    After the first round, the district spelling bee came down to seventh grader Kayla West and Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg sixth grader Colin Charles.
    All other participants competing that night in the Anderson County High School auditorium had already misspelled a word and were knocked out the competition.
    The only ones left were West and Charles, West remembered last Friday.
    “I spelled two words right, and that was pretty much it,” she said.

  • Middle school academic team takes first at district competition

    The middle school academic team was declared the first place district champions at the district competition held Jan. 25 at Shelby East Middle School.
    The Anderson County middle school academic team, comprised of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, placed first.
    Shelby East took home second with East Oldham following at third.
    The Future Problem Solving team — Jalen Creth, Kara Cundiff, Hannah Whitaker and Miranda Carlton — placed first, as did the Quick Recall Team.

  • Blue Grass Community Action offers $750 scholarship

    Blue Grass Community Action will be offering a $750 scholarship to an Anderson County resident, according to a press release from Blue Grass Community Action Partnership.
    The applicant must meet the guidelines for the Community Service Block Grant program and meet other competitive requirements. The scholarship may be used to help cover expenses associated with attending college or a technical school of the recipient’s choice.

    Jacoby named to the Dean’s List at Citadel
    William Earl Jacoby of Lawrenceburg has been named to the Dean’s List at the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, for academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year, according to a release.
    Dean’s List recognition is given to those students whose grade point average is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.

  • Students collaborate on snowy poetry

    Several students in one of Mrs. Hardin’s classes collaborated to write a poem about their experiences during the recent snow days, according to a release. They contributed written images and experiences, separated them into categories, and then created a poetry stanza for each category.
    Finally, students edited the poem and took a picture in some remaining slush around the school. Participating students were Brenda Jo Rogers, Solomia Chuburuk, Kameron Sunbom, Zariahn McKee, Jakori Bell, Joseph Denny, Jamie Walton and Robbie DuPlanti.

    Students eligible for Governor’s Mansion Centennial art and essay contest
    Kentucky public, private and home school students are invited to submit original artwork and/or essays in the Governor’s Mansion Centennial Visual Art and Essay Contest sponsored by First Lady Jane Beshear, the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion Centennial Committee and the Kentucky Department of Education, according to a news release from the state education department.

    Saffell Street Elementary recently released its fourth and fifth grade honor roll for the second nine weeks of the 2013-2014 school year.
