  • Saffell student places in conservation poster contest

    Savannah Thompson, a fourth grader at Saffell Street Elementary, placed ninth out of 43,000 entries for her artwork at the state Jim Claypool Art Contest.
    Thompson is a daughter of Chris and Dana Thompson and granddaughter of Bobby and Linda Durr and Allen and Julia Thompson of Lawrenceburg.
    Each year, the fourth graders at Saffell Street Elementary participate in the Jim Claypool Art Contest sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts.

  • Anderson schools adjust to new standards after NCLB waiver

    The Department of Education granted Kentucky its request on Feb. 9 for a No Child Left Behind waiver, and school districts like Anderson County now need to adjust to a new state assessment system for educational standards.
    The state’s new Unbridled Learning Accountability Model, as outlined through Senate Bill 1, focuses on meeting one Average Measureable Objective or AMO instead of the many separate learning targets required with the old assessment and accountability system.

    Dragoo earns scholarship
    Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington has awarded a scholarship to an Anderson County student.
    Jacqueline Dragoo of Lawrenceburg has received the presidential scholarship, which provides for full tuition, books and fees and is awarded to students who have outstanding academic performance.

  • 4-H Club meets at Ward

    The Brainpoppers 4-H Club met Feb. 7 at Emma B. Ward.
    The meeting was called to order by the club president Olivia Rader.
    The American pledge was led by Jalen Newton, and the 4-H pledge was led by Kortney Roberts.
    We answered roll call by jumping out of your chair.
    The club secretary, Hunter Rutherford, read the minutes from our last meeting.

  • EKU student researches media’s future; Transy student wins press award

    Ryan Alves of Lawrenceburg presented research on the future of Kentucky media at Eastern Kentucky University’s annual Posters-at-the-Capitol event in Frankfort.
    Alves, Whitney Leggett of Winchester, and Lindsay Huffman of Park City, mentored by Deborah Givens of EKU’s faculty, titled their poster “The Future of Kentucky Media: The 2011 EKU Community Journalism Project.”

  • Schools’ planning committee to meet

    The Anderson County Schools’ Local Planning Committee will conduct a meeting on Monday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m., at the Anderson County Board of Education Office, 1160 Bypass North, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.
    The meeting is one of a series of meetings to develop a District Facilities Plan for the Anderson County Public Schools.
    The public is invited.

  • Way We Were: Lola worked all day, danced all night

    50 YEARS AGO
    Feb. 8, 1962 – Feb. 15, 1962
    Billy Spencer received severe chest bruises while cutting trees at his farm on the Ninevah Road.
    A limb he was cutting from a tree that had already been cut down struck Spencer. He was confined to his home.

    Billy Young, son of Charles W. Young, jailer of Anderson County, was ill with rheumatic fever in a San Diego, Calif., hospital. He was expected to be hospitalized for six weeks or more, according to word received by his father.
