    Handy selected for wind ensemble
    Jessica Handy of Lawrenceburg was selected to perform in the University of Evansville’s wind ensemble at the Indiana Music Educators’ Association annual convention in Fort Wayne, Ind., the school announced.
    The 46-member ensemble — including Handy, who is majoring in music therapy — is among a select group of collegiate ensembles invited to perform at the IMEA convention, a professional development conference for Indiana music teachers.

  • BCTC students named to fall semester Dean’s List

    The following Anderson County students were named to the 2012 fall semester dean’s list at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, the school reported.
    Students need a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in courses numbered 100 or above to qualify.

  • ACE offers crash course in pottery

    Adult Community Education is offering a pottery wheel crash course Thursday, Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. through Elements Clay Studio and Stuff and ceramics artist Susan Burge.
    “This is a great opportunity to use the potter’s wheel and gain a basic understanding of the beginner process of wheel-throwing clay,” according to a news release from ACE.  “This 2-hour session includes demonstration, hands-on wheel throwing and the pottery hand-building experience.”

    Student named to Harding University Dean’s List
    Lawrenceburg resident Ashlyn Paden, a junior at Harding University, is among more than 1,000 University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall semester. To be eligible, a student must be carrying 12 or more hours with a 3.65 or higher grade-point average and no incompletes.

    The Adult Learning Center will offer a new literacy program for those 16 years and older, “Adventures in Reading,” and is looking for volunteers to assist with the program.

  • Sixth graders thank senior citizens for sharing stories, advice

    Editor’s note: Students in Mrs. Jennifer Johnson’s sixth grade literacy class at the Anderson County Middle School read a story titled “Notes from the Midnight Driver.” The book is about a teenage boy who breaks the law and, as punishment, is assigned community service at a nursing home. His assigned resident is a very grumpy man; however, as the book progresses the two characters discover they have several things in common and in the end become good friends.

    Eight high school  students and nine middle school students were recently named to the all-district band, Superintendent Sheila Mitchell reported during the Dec. 17 board of education meeting.
