  • Christian Academy classrooms to receive $25,000 makeovers

    The Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg will receive two preschool classroom makeovers, courtesy of the new Kentucky All STARS program through the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Education.

    “We won the classroom makeovers at the Kids Ready Now Conference that was held in Louisville over the summer,” Preschool Director Michelle Robinson said. “We originally won one classroom makeover and were very excited about that award. Then, before fall break, we received the good news that, in fact, we had won two classroom makeovers.”

  • Run Club at Saffell Street making strides

    When the doors to the playground spring open at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students, ranging in age from first through fifth grade, burst from the school and settle into a steady pace as they race around the sidewalks circling the play area.

    From lanky, knobby-kneed 10-year-olds to chubby cheeked second graders, the children run or walk for the next 45 minutes. But, as children tend to do, the exercise they are getting is disguised by the fun they are having.

  • Career Day gets students thinking about future

    Eighteen different careers were paraded in front of students at Emma B. Ward Elementary School last week in hopes of getting the children to start thinking about their future.

    Some of the people, like Sherry Noon, youth and family services manager at the Anderson Public Library, were familiar faces to the students.

    Others, like chiropractor Dr. Arthur Pangemanan showing off his model of a spinal column and trapper Anthony Wilcox passing around pelts of the animals he’s caught, weren’t as familiar.

    Rue wins Todd Louis

    Musgrave Scholarship

    Jamie Rue of Lawrenceburg has been awarded the Todd Louis Musgrave Scholarship to attend Bluegrass Community & Technical College for the 2016-17 academic year.

    This endowed scholarship was established in 2001 by Tom and Zena Musgrave in memory of Todd L. Musgrave.

    This renewable scholarship shall be awarded to students who are business majors or have concentration in retail or marketing; possess a strong spirit; and a willingness to help others.

  • Saffell Street’s Miller voted top instructor

    Teresa Miller says she didn’t choose teaching as much as teaching chose her.

    Miller, who has taught all of her nearly 24 years at Saffell Street Elementary School, didn’t head back to college to become a teacher until age 32.

    “I had been involved in children’s ministries and volunteered in my daughters’ classes at Saffell. Max Workman kept telling me I should be a teacher. I felt God calling me to become a teacher too,” she explained.

  • Warren, Hyatt voted top educators

    Ginger Warren is quick to admit if she could go back in time and be a student again, she would.

    “I would appreciate and soak in what I was learning so much more, knowing what I know now,” said Warren, who was voted this year’s Best of Anderson Middle School Teacher.

    “Mrs. (Ginger) Warren is very dedicated and enthusiastic about her profession,” Jeanna Rose, Anderson County Middle School Principal said.

  • After hiking tax rate, school board baffled by tight budget

    Despite setting a tax rate to take the highest revenue increase allowed by law, some members of the Anderson County Board of Education were baffled last week when Finance Officer David Wilkerson presented his working budget for the 2016-17 school year.

    “We raised taxes and now we’re barely breaking even?” questioned board member Roger McDowell.

    “We really needed a tax increase in the worst way. If we didn’t we’d be in the hole,” Wilkerson responded.

    Chairman Lee Hahn echoed McDowell’s concerns.
