    Most Joes relish the moment they no longer have to risk life and limb protecting and serving the public as police officers.

    Heck, most Joes would never voluntarily risk life and limb in the first place.

    But Joe Milam is certainly not your average Joe.

    Sworn in last Thursday morning as the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department’s chief deputy, Milam spent the past two decades putting his life on the line with the Kentucky State Police before retiring last August.

  • Missing woman returns to city

    A Lawrenceburg woman who was missing for nearly a week returned home Monday afternoon.

    Tiffany Florence Hill, 20, of 208 Ash Court was reported missing last Wednesday afternoon after she reportedly voluntarily got into a man’s vehicle in the Kroger parking lot.

    Family members confirmed that the woman was OK Monday afternoon.

    Family members were concerned because she left her own vehicle in the Kroger lot and had not contacted them as of Monday morning.

  • Schools to receive $1.1 million in stimulus funds

    Anderson County Schools will receive at least $1.1 million in economic stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 over the next two years, administrators announced at Monday night’s Board of Education meeting.

    The act appropriates new funding for preschool, special education and Title I federal programs. Anderson County’s $1,197,821 will be allocated as follows: preschool will receive $59,022, Title I will receive $261,220 and special education will receive $877,579.

  • Legion offers Memorial Day service

    American Legion Post 34 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34 have scheduled a Memorial Day service for Sunday, May 24 beginning at 3 p.m.

    The service will be held at the Wall of Honor and Healing Field, located at 725 West Broadway.

    The service will be held in remembrance of fallen heroes and soldiers here and abroad who are still protecting and ensuring our freedom, organizer said in a news release.

    Judge Linda Armstrong heard the following cases during Anderson District Court proceedings Feb. 12.

    Ethan Goodlett, disposition, first-degree criminal trespassing -- continued to May 7.

    Maurice Goodlett Jr., disposition, two counts of dogs to be licensed -- dismissed.

    Shelly Gottesman, motion to expunge, theft by unlawful taking (less than $300), first-degree criminal trespassing -- denied.

    Juanita Gray, review, theft by deception (less than $300) -- paid.

  • City squashes Sunday package sales

    By a vote of 5-1, the Lawrenceburg City Council shot down the possibility of selling package alcoholic beverages on Sunday.

    After a public hearing to hear from both sides of the issue before the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night, Councilman Ken Evans made a motion during the meeting to remove the issue from the agenda and instruct City Attorney Robert Myles to discontinue his work on constructing an ordinance.

    Councilman Larry Giles seconded the motion, and councilmen Bobby Durr, Steven Rucker and Sandy Goodlett backed Evans’ motion.

  • Residents gather to celebrate Day of Prayer

    Around 100 residents joined their hands, bowed their heads and lifted up their prayers Thursday afternoon on the courthouse lawn to celebrate the National Day of Prayer.

    Local religious leaders from several denominations attended the event at the courthouse and led citizens in prayers for the military, local and national government, families, educators and the church.

    Participants and organizers were thankful for a good turnout and good weather, said Alonzo Gaines.

  • Report: Impersonator beats, steals man’s pit bull mix

    A man impersonating an animal control officer beat another man’s dog with a baton and confiscated it last Thursday afternoon, according to a report obtained from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

    Aaron Miller of 1139 Versailles Road told police that a white Dodge pickup truck pulled up beside his residence and that a man identified himself as an animal control officer.

  • Homes sales tumble by nearly half

    Home sales in Anderson County fell nearly 50 percent in the first quarter of 2009, according to statistics released by the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors.

    During the first quarter of 2008, the association reports that 67 homes were sold compared to only 35 in the first quarter this year, according to the statistics.

    “The first quarter in Anderson County was just awful this time,” said Danny Willis, broker of Century 21 Commonwealth Real Estate.

  • Newspaper moving into new office on June 1

    After spending more than a century on Main Street, The Anderson News is moving to a new location.

    Beginning June 1, the newspaper office will be located at 1080 Bypass South, next door to Countrywide and two doors down from State Farm Insurance.

    The News office will operate on Main Street under its normal business hours through Wednesday, May 27. The office will be closed on Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29 to move, but will re-open under normal business hours at the new location on Monday, June 1.
