  • Bringing home the bacon

    Five members of Anderson County's 4-H Livestock Club recently brought home honors at the Kentucky State Fair in the 4-H country ham competition.

    Quetzal Velasco received the Reserve Champion Speech award in the 9-year-old division.

    Chelsea Whittle received the Reserve Champion Speech award in the 14-year-old division.

    Alyssa Hollander received the Reserve Champion Ham award in the 14-year-old division.

    Kate Wickizer and Travis Wickizer both received blue ribbons on their country hams.

  • Manhunt nabs third home invasion suspect

    The man who led city, county and state police on a manhunt Aug. 15 was caught and arrested Saturday in Lexington, according to a news release from the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

    Montez Lamont Graves, 24, of Nicholasville, was arrested in Fayette County by the Lexington Police Department Gang Unit on the Anderson County charges, the release said.

  • Man kicked in face by horse dies

    A Lawrenceburg man died last Thursday, 10 days after being kicked in the head by his horse.

    Franklin D. "Cracker" Holt Jr., 69, of 1705 Jenny Lillard Road, was feeding his 3-year-old horse on Aug. 13 when it apparently was spooked and kicked him in the face, his wife of 40 years, Judy, said Monday afternoon.

    The blow caused him to fall and break his hip. His wife said he likely laid there for a while, but was able to retrieve his cell phone and call her for help.

  • Better than Gold

    The first time Charlie Klink met his future wife, he bought her a balloon at a church festival.

    "It probably cost about a nickel then," Charlie said.

    A friend introduced the two while they were walking around the festival, but that balloon must have sealed the deal.

    Charlie and his wife, Ginny, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 8.

    The Klinks were married in 1943.

    "But I'll tell you what, it's gone by in a hurry," Charlie said.

    At the time of the wedding, Charlie was 22 and Ginny was 20, he said.

  • Candidates set for general election

    Candidates for four local elections have been set as the last day to file to run in the general election was Aug. 12.

    The election will be Nov. 4.

    County clerk

    Republican Jason Denny will face Democrat Anthony Stratton in the race for county clerk.

    Denny is a magistrate on the Anderson County Fiscal Court. Stratton is a former magistrate and judge-executive.

  • Smokey wouldn't like this one bit

    Smokey Bear would take a narrow view of the likely cause of a fire that toppled a massive oak tree Monday afternoon behind the Briar Creek subdivision in Lawrenceburg.

    City Fire Chief Robert Hume said it appeared the fire was set, likely by kids hanging out next to it and tossing cigarette butts in the tree's hollow trunk.

    "You can see a couple of wooden blocks at the base ... kind of like someone was sitting there," Hume said. "There certainly weren't any lightning strikes today."

  • Dump truck clips power line, causes outages in city

    The bed of a dump truck clipped a power line on Djeddah Drive on Friday afternoon, pulling down two electric poles and causing widespread power outages in Lawrenceburg.

    Lawrenceburg Police Officer David Patterson said the driver of the dump truck thought the bed was down and locked, but an issue with the hydraulics of the truck caused the bed to rise and catch the power lines.

    One electric pole was pulled down in the road at 119 Djeddah Drive, and the next pole in line fell in a neighbor's backyard.

    At least one of the poles appeared to be dry rotted.
