  • Extension inches closer to taxing authority

    The Anderson County Extension Service is one step closer to being able to collect property taxes.

    During its meeting Tuesday night, the Anderson County Fiscal Court allowed a first reading of an ordinance that would give taxing authority to the extension service.

    Although the rates could change during a required second reading of the ordinance, magistrates proposed a tax rate that means property owners will pay an additional tax of $16 per $100,000 of assessed value.

  • GOP selects Denny for clerk

    The race for county clerk is set now that the county's Republican Party has nominated Fiscal Court Magistrate Jason Denny.

    Denny, who is in the middle of his first term on the fiscal court, was selected among four candidates Friday night to challenge former judge-executive Anthony Stratton, a Democrat, to fulfill the remaining two years of the late Harold Ritchey's county clerk position.

    Ritchey collapsed and died earlier this summer.

    Denny said the job is one he's had his eye on for years.

  • Man arrested after report of gunshots

    A Lawrenceburg man was arrested July 13 after the Lawrenceburg Police Department responded to a report of gunshots on Township Square.

    Joseph A. Pratt, 39, Lawrenceburg, was arrested by Officer Josh Satterly on charges of wanton endangerment and alcohol intoxication.

    Ashley N. Richardson, 19, Lawrenceburg, was arrested by Officer Teddy Melton on charges of possession of alcohol by a minor and alcohol intoxication after a suspicious person complaint was made on Dudley Street.

  • Family Fun Fest set for July 31

    The seventh annual Anderson County Schools Family Fun Fest will be Thursday, July 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Anderson County Middle School.

    The first 800 Anderson County students in preschool to eighth grade to attend will receive free backpacks with school supplies.

    The event is sponsored by the district Family Resource and Youth Service Centers, Wal-Mart and the middle school

  • Humane Society to county: Pay up!

    The Anderson Humane Society wants its money and wants it now.

    After waiting more than a year for the Anderson County Fiscal Court to reimburse them for work completed to its animal shelter in 2006, Humane Society officials have retained an attorney, and the agency's treasurer said she is considering charging the court interest to the tune of 18 percent until the balance is paid.

    The fiscal court voted in June 2007 to reimburse the Humane Society for the $7,700 it spent to enlarge the lagoon and install adequate lighting and fencing at the animal shelter.

  • Survivor shares support of God, Relay during battle with cancer

    David Perkins played music during last year's Relay for Life, never dreaming that by this year's Relay, he'd be among the dozens of cancer survivors on hand to share their terrifying experiences.

    "Last year when I came to provide music, I didn't realize that you all were doing this for me," Perkins said with a cracking voice and tears welling in his eyes.

    "I became a part of this unique family in February, and have had a lot of help from this new family since I joined."

    Not that Perkins is a stranger to one of the leading killers in the United States.

  • Emotional Relay provides inspiration, shatters goal

    Emotion is defined by Webster's as "a mental reaction experienced as a strong feeling."

    For a more accurate definition, the dictionary maker should have attended last Friday's Relay for Life event.

    The annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society was replete with emotional moments, not the least of which was when its organizer, Pam Ware, welcomed the crowd and shared that just that morning she had buried her father, who died after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

    "This year, Relay has taken on a whole new meaning for me," she said, wiping tears from her eyes.

  • As fuel skyrockets, schools might consider shortening week

    With the costs of gasoline and diesel fuel rising, several school districts in Kentucky are throwing around the idea of a four-day school week, but Anderson County isn't one of them - yet.

    Superintendent Kim Shaw said there has been no talk of a four-day school week in this district, but it is something the school system might need to look into.

    "As fuel costs and other energy costs go up, we have to consider all our options," Shaw said. "It's something our district probably needs to study."

    But Shaw said he's not a fan of cutting back the days students are in school.

  • Weekend horse show 'as big as they get'

    Lawrenceburg will host the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Association State Horse Show this weekend at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

    The association has 52 classes and seven championship classes. The turnout for the show is expected to be high, said David Hufana, sales and marketing manager of KMSHA, since this is a triple A rated, national show.

    "We expect upwards of 300 entries," he said. "This show is as big as they get."

    What makes this show unique is the horses, Hufana said. The Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse is the only horse native to Kentucky.

  • Anderson County couple win big with $20 scratch-off lottery ticket

    Terry and Tracy Durham of Lawrenceburg recently won $140,000 with a scratch-off lottery ticket they bought in town.

    According to a news release from the Kentucky Lottery, Terry Durham bought a $20 ticket from Murphy USA on Hwy 127 Bypass North and took it back to the car. When he and his wife scratched it off, they had won $100.

    The couple decided to take $80 in cash and buy another ticket. Terry bought a different $20 ticket this time, called Royal Riches.
