  • Engagement: McEntyre-White

    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer S. McEntyre, to William Joseph White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony White.
    The bride is also the daughter of the late Richard McEntyre.
    The bride graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in May 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.
    The groom will graduate from Eastern Kentucky University in May 2014 with a bachelor of science degree. Both the bride and the groom are educators.

    Compassionate Friends announce upcoming meetings
    The Compassionate Friends will host meetings for bereavement parents who have lost children of any age.
    Meetings are held on the first Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and the third Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the hospice building, 643 Teton Trail in Frankfort.

  • Library board approves $1.357 million budget

    Library board trustees approved a $1.357 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year after heated debate over giving a 2 percent raise for applicable library staff.
    Board members voted 4-0, with library board president Bryan Proctor abstaining from the final vote.
    Library Director Pam Mullins advocated for a 2 percent salary raise for her staff — those who have completed a full year of service — by July 1, an increase she said would amount to less than 50 cents per hour per employee.

    ‘Longest Day of Play’ to be held in Legion park June 11
    The Anderson County Health Department will host its fifth annual “Longest Day of Play” on June 11 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the American Legion Park.
    According to a press release from the health department, the Longest Day of Play is an effort to increase physical activity for adults and youth in Anderson County.

  • Health board approves flat tax rate, fewer furlough hours for employees

    With the specter of the fiscal court approving a tax rate increase looming over its head, the Anderson County Board of Health voted unanimously recently to keep its tax rate flat.
    Fresh off being informed by County Attorney Bobbi Jo Lewis that the fiscal court would have to vote to include its rate on property tax bills, health board members batted around several rate increase options, including raising the tax rate from 30 cents per $1,000 in assessed property value to 40 cents.

  • Scales for recycling center put on hold

    An effort to install scales at the county’s recycling center was put on hold last Tuesday when magistrates tabled the issue due to the absence of vacationing Magistrate David Ruggles.
    They also got an inside look at the impact Obamacare will have on county government, its employees and even inmates.
    Ruggles, who chairs the fiscal court’s solid waste committee, has spoken in favor of installing scales at the recycling center and charging several cents per pound for those who dump nearly everything but household trash into a compactor there.

    Students named to Harding University Dean’s List
    Erin Paden, a junior vocal music education major; Ashlyn Paden, a junior psychology major; and Laura Paden, a senior web design and interact media, all of Lawrenceburg, were among more than 1,000 Harding University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring 2013 semester.

  • Pierian Woman’s Club awards student art show prizes, scholarships

    The Lawrenceburg Pierian Woman’s Club awarded cash prizes at its May 16 meeting to high school student winners in the art contest and exhibition held May 11 in the Anderson County High School auditorium lobby.
    First, second and third place prizes were awarded for painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and mixed media.
    Winners were Glenna Curry, Sydney Jessee, Elizabeth Jones, Christina Watson, Katie Davis, Mary Osborn, Sarah Cubert, Kelsey Mullins, Hallie Morgan, Megan Adkins and Forrest Coffey.
