  • Keeping her commitment every Sunday

    Anna-Marie Hyatt won't be mentioned in any of the Miss Softball discussions. There might be a few post-season honors over the next few weeks, but the hullabaloo about them will probably be limited to a note in this newspaper or posts on Facebook.

    Even though golf is going to help pay for her college education, she never made that state tournament in that sport, missing by one stroke last fall. There have been ups and downs along the way, but one thing has remained constant.

  • COLUMN: Track coach redefining success

    Success is often a matter of perspective.

    Such is the case with the track program at Anderson County High School. When the points were tallied at the state Class 3A meet Saturday, the girls team had been shut out and the boys' team had finished 22nd with only eight points.

  • Sports briefs for May 22, 2013

    Bearcat camp registrations under way

    Anderson County High School boys' basketball coach Glen Drury has announced the annual Bearcat Basketball Camp will be held from Monday, June 3 through Thursday, June 6.

    The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 1-9.

    Campers entering grades 1-3 should report to Saffell Street School while campers in grades 4-9 should report to Anderson County High School where further gym assignments will be made.

    Camp hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. but camp staff will be present from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • SOFTBALL: Lady Bearcats slam Owen in finale

    Anderson County sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 12 times, in the first inning then coasted to a 12-0 win over visiting Owen County in the regular-season softball finale Friday night.

    The game was called in the middle of the fourth inning due to the “mercy rule.”

    Kaci Currens highlighted the inning with a grand slam that hit off the top of the scoreboard beyond left field fence. Currens' blast ended the scoring and she was credited with six RBI on the night. Currens delivered a two-run double her first time up.

  • Missed opportunities cost Bearcats in season-ending loss to Collins

    Anderson County needed perfection, but the Bearcats only got near that mark Tuesday night.

    Collins ended Anderson's season when Dan Sanders ripped a two-out single, scoring Mason Jeffries in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Titans a 1-0 win in the 30th District semi-finals at Shelby County.

    Jeffries, who had reached on a fielder's choice, easily scored the game-winner when Sanders' hit fell in.

  • BASEBALL: Bearcats upset Woodford in regular-season finale

    The sting of a trying season might last a while for Anderson County baseball bu the Bearcats showed over the final week of the season they still had some punch left.

    The Bearcats upset defending state champion Woodford County Saturday at Chandler Field in Versailles. Senior Zach Mason got the win with perhaps the strongest pitching performance of his career. Mason threw five innings, giving up four hits and three walks while surrendering only one earne run.

    Woodford was ranked eighth in the state in the final regular-season poll.

  • Yett medals in two events at state track meet

    LOUISVILLE -- Anderson County did not finish among the team leaders at the state Class 3A track and field meet Saturday, but there were still plenty of smiles in the Bearcat camp.

    The meet was held at the University of Louisville.

    “To see how we did as a unit, it is quite an improvement,” Anderson assistant coach Jason Dickerson said. Dickerson was in charge of the team as head coach Robert Meacham was fulfilling a military commitment.

  • BASEBALL canceled Friday

    Anderson County's baseball game at Danville, scheduled for Friday night, has been canceled, Anderson athletic director Rick Sallee told The Anderson News Friday morning.

    There will be no make-up date.

    The Bearcats play at Woodford County on Saturday at noon.  Post-season play begins with the 30th District Tournament Tuesday night vs. Collins at Shelby County at 6 p.m.
