  • COLUMN: J-Town is not your normal homecoming night date

    A homecoming opponent is supposed to be a football game against one of those teams that is the equivalent of an open date.

    You know what I am talking about. You look at the schedule, pick out one of your home games in the middle of the year and say, “This one is the one that we should be able to throw our helmets on the field, have a good time, win and then go dancing.”

    The official homecoming-picker must have had some blinders on when that choice was Jeffersontown.

  • COLUMN: If you're hunting, be safe, legal

    Ah, going outside on a cool morning just before daylight with your father, mother or other family member.

    Watching carefully and being as quiet as you can as you listen closely to the rustle of leaves. Then getting an adrenaline rush as you see a deer come out of the woods.

    While not everyone is a hunter, some of us are and it’s always exciting. I’m a hunter. My dad and I go during the season and we know the importance of being safe, legal and responsible.

    Health chair should be open minded or resign

    To the editor:

    I attended the Anderson County Board of Health meeting, August 23, 2009 to express my concern about the ordinance concerning septic systems. This meeting was for the public to make comments about the current ordinance.

    The board of health stated that this ordinance was in the best interest of Anderson County due to groundwater and public health concerns over failing septic systems. However, the board could not produce facts as to why a system would need pumping every three years.

  • Semi crashes on Bluegrass Parkway

    A semi tractor and trailer crashed just before 2 a.m. Thursday on the Bluegrass Parkway, according to a news release from the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.

    The single vehicle crash occurred at the 51-mile marker in the eastbound lanes.

    One person was transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center with undetermined injuries, the news release said.

    At least one lane is now open to traffic.

    According to the news release, the crash is still under investigation.

  • COLUMN: There’s plenty to love about fall

    Yesterday was the first official day of fall — one of my favorite seasons.

    Last year, I wrote about how much I love the smell of fall and how my husband pointed out that that means I must love the smell of dead leaves. Well, so be it. But I won’t bore you with that two years in a row.

    Last week, as we were tossing around ideas for a poll question on our website, it occurred to me that fall was literally just a week away. So, we decided to find out what you — our readers — love most about fall.

  • 'I'm in it to win it'

    Rumor became reality Monday when Magistrate John Wayne Conway confirmed he will run for Anderson County judge-executive next year.

    Conway, who represents the county’s 6th District, became the first Democrat to toss his hat in the ring against incumbent Steve Cornish, who has not publicly announced if he will seek re-election. Donna Drury announced that she will run earlier this year as an independent candidate.

    Conway said he has been considering a run for judge-executive for months, and that it’s time to make it official.

  • Truck pull to benefit 4-H

    A truck and tractor pull to benefit Anderson County 4-H is planned for Saturday, Oct. 3.

    The event will begin around 6 p.m. in the Anderson County Community Park, said Marva Gill, Anderson County Extension agent for 4-H youth development.

  • COLUMN: Fall's onset means it's time to put gardens to bed

    I was driving home just after dusk the other night and caught a whiff of watermelons in the air.

    It was cut grass, but to me it smelled like watermelon. It was like a last hoorah of summer.

    Well, autumn did officially begin yesterday. I know the cycle of life includes all four seasons, but I do hate to see the warm one go. But, go it must.

    I’m sure I’m not the only gardener that dreads putting the garden to bed. Now if I were getting ready to plant, I’d be raring to go.
