  • DeLong dominates Rebels

    Kyle DeLong wasn’t overpowering. Owen County just couldn’t hit him Friday night.

    The junior left-hander scattered five hits and struck out nine as homestanding Anderson County routed its regional rival, 9-1.

    DeLong gave up an unearned run in the first, then was in complete control the rest of the way. At one point he retired 10 straight batters and did not issue a walk as he went the distance for the newly-ranked Bearcats.

  • Meth lab discovered on Tracy Road

    An Anderson County man was arrested Friday afternoon after the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office discovered a methamphetamine lab in his home on Tracy Road.

    Aaron Bruner, 30, 1100 Tracy Road, was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and first-degree possession of a controlled substance.

    The manufacturing charge is a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years imprisonment, and the possession charge is a Class D felony punishable by one to five years imprisonment, said Detective Bryan Taylor.

  • Turpin homers, combines with Brown to shut out Spencer

    TAYLORSVILLE -- Courtney Turpin blasted a two-run home run and combined with Lauren Brown on a two-hit shutout as Anderson County bombed host Spencer County, 10-0, Tuesday night. Anderson extended its winning streak to 12 games, but most importantly, capped the top seed in the 30th District Tournament next month.

    The teams endured a rain delay of over two hours, putting the first pitch, set for 6 p.m., back to 8:10.

  • Century Bank enters ‘cease and desist’ deal with FDIC

    Bad loans during a bad economy resulted in Century Bank entering a cease and desist arrangement with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Lawrenceburg-based bank announced last week.

    Bank officials were quick to point out that the order doesn’t mean customers can no longer borrow money, nor does it place in jeopardy money they have on deposit.

  • Court moves forward with Sunday alcohol sales

    Selling alcohol by the drink on Sundays in restaurants outside city limits moved one step closer to becoming reality during last Tuesday night’s meeting of the Anderson County Fiscal Court.

    Magistrates voted to have County Attorney Bobbi Jo Lewis draft a series of ordinances that would allow for Sunday by the drink sales, along with sales at convention centers, bowling alleys and wineries.

  • County cracks back on pit bulls

    The recent rash of dog attacks has county officials considering an ordinance that would restrict or possibly ban the ownership of pit bulls and other dangerous animals.

    Anderson County Fiscal Court magistrates ordered County Attorney Bobbi Jo Lewis to draft such an ordinance during their meeting last Tuesday night.

    Magistrates also tabled for further consideration an ordinance that would allow animal control office Jason Chesser to carry firearms to protect him while responding to vicious animal calls.

  • Graeter pleads guilty in Food Court slaying

    The Lawrenceburg man charged with fatally stabbing a Franklin County man outside the Lawrenceburg Food Court on Jan. 16, 2008 has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence.

    Frederick C. Graeter, 19, was originally charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Robert Snider, 20, to death.

    First-degree murder is a Class A Felony punishable by 20 years to life in prison.

  • Health department prepares for swine flu outbreak

    Cases of swine flu have not been reported in Anderson County or Kentucky, but the Anderson County Health Department is still keeping an eye on the situation.

    “Our office is participating in conference calls with the Department for Public Health on a daily basis and we are preparing for a community-wide response should that become necessary,” said Public Health Director Brandon Hurley.

  • Monday softball canceled, baseball game time changed

    The Anderson County softball game at Woodford County, scheduled for Monday night, has been canceled due to wet grounds. Coach Brian Glass says the game will likely not be made up.

    The Bearcat baseball game at Franklin County is still on but the junior varsity game has been canceled and the varsity first pitch has been moved to 7 p.m.

    The freshman softball game with Ballard has also been canceled.

    The 11th-ranked Lady Cats return to action Wednesday against No. 10 Scott County at the Anderson field. Check back for more updates.

  • THE SPORTS BUZZ for May 3: Basketball banquet a time to reflect, look ahead

    I had the chance to attend the Anderson County boys' basketball awards' banquet on Sunday afternoon. It was quite a celebration of the program's most successful year, in terms of the post-season, since 1997. We'll have the award winners in the May 6 Anderson News.
