UPDATED MONDAY 5:45 P.M. — A Lawrenceburg woman is in custody after allegedly setting her grandmother's Center Street home on fire Sunday night and fleeing the scene.

Cheryl Brogan, 41, of 309 Center St., was arrested following a traffic accident in Arkansas and is charged with first-degree arson. Other charges are pending.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Ron Turley said Brogan was a caregiver for her grandmother, Janet Scroggins, 81, who owns the home.

NEW CASTLE – Anderson County owned the final six minutes to defeat North Oldham 52-42 in the first round of the Eighth Region tournament at Henry County High School on Wednesday night.

Tied at 35, Anderson coach Glen Drury called timeout with 6:07 to play. Twenty-two seconds later, Jacob Russell scored in the lane to give the Bearcats a lead they never relinquished.

Anderson held the high-scoring Mustangs to 35 points below their average. “That is our trademark,” said Drury.

Gov. Beshear’s visit last week to discuss early childhood education sparked an interesting conversation here in our office.

Granted, no one on either side of this issue pretends to know a fraction of what it really takes to publicly educate a child, and we’re sure this concept certainly would not pass muster with state and federal education czars so deeply invested in the current system.

Instead, the following is more of a “throw it on the wall, see what sticks” sort of scenario, but one that drew raves from some, raspberries from others.

Hey, Carlson, is Obama the devil or not?

To the editor:

Mr. Carlson;

You have supplied everyone with some needed comments and views about local issues. But you haven’t expressed your opinion openly about our current president on the first page of the editorial section, sir.

[Some of my relatives] have expressed their view, in private, that Barack Obama is the devil incarnate. Mr. Carlson, could you please disabuse them of this quaint notion about our president — about this very bright and well-meaning man?
