  • Obtaining agricultural credit in troubled times

    Much has been said about the availability of credit in today’s world of troubled markets, failing businesses and loan losses.

    Credit is certainly still available, but in seeking a loan you need to visit your prospective lender armed with a proposal that is reasonable and easily understood by the loan officer.

    You need to address, in a written business plan, what are referred to as the “Five Cs of Credit,” namely character, capacity, conditions, capital and collateral.

  • Spring’s only seven Wednesdays away

    Are you getting the itch? Join the crowd.

    February is almost here and seeds will soon hit the dirt. It doesn’t matter that the dirt is in pots.

    Whether you want to be the first on the block to harvest or you just want to lower your grocery bill ASAP, you can get a head start by starting from seeds or cuttings.

    If you brought some plants inside to overwinter then you can start some cuttings now in pots. Good potting soil and sharp scissors are a good start. A rooting compound is helpful but not essential.

  • COLUMN: Drury dressing up for cause dear to his heart

    Glen Drury will be getting dressed up Saturday night.

    Not that we would expect his upgrade to make Rick Pitino sweat, but the Anderson County boys’ basketball coach is supposed to wear a coat and tie when the Bearcats play at Simon Kenton.

    “I will wear a tie,” chuckles Drury, who is fond of pullovers or open-collared shirts.

    The coat? Let’s just say that the last one Drury wore while coaching ripped straight down the back seam. That was back in December 1987 when his first Anderson team was playing at Christian Academy of Louisville.

  • County schools closed Wednesday

    Anderson County Schools will be closed Wednesday, school officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

    Schools were also closed Monday and Tuesday because of the weather.

  • ICE STORM 2009: Shelter relocates to Lawrenceburg Methodist Church

    An emergency shelter for those seeking refuge from power outages and freezing temperatures has been relocated to Lawrenceburg Methodist Church on Carlton Drive.

    The shelter opened this morning in the Anthony Stratton Building at the community park as an estimated 25 to 30 percent of households in the county were without power in the midst of a winter storm that dumped several inches of ice and snow in the area.

    But this afternoon, Lawrenceburg Methodist offered to open its doors, said Charlie O'Neal, emergency management director.

  • Crash kills high school junior

    UPDATED 8:15 P.M. MONDAY -- An Anderson County High School junior was killed this afternoon in a one-car accident on Bardstown Road.

    Zachery Morey, 16, of 1183 Ashby Road, died when the car he was driving left the road and struck a tree.

    The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. just before Beaver Lake Road.

    Morey was pronounced dead at the scene.

    He was the only son of Steven and Audrey Morey.

    The Anderson County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Also responding were the Anderson County Fire Department and EMS.

  • Here’s to an open government

    Last week I wrote about the reasons I got into journalism and the reasons why I stay. In that column, I also stated that I believe people have a right to be informed and, at the very least, you deserve to know what’s going on around you.

    Well, praise God, we finally have a president who agrees with me — at least to a certain extent.

    One of President Barack Obama’s first duties in office was to issue a memo encouraging government agencies to better comply with the Freedom of Information Act.

  • Teen killed in Bardstown Road wreck

    An Anderson County High School junior was killed Monday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving went out of control and slammed into a tree on Bardstown Road.

    Zachery Morey, 16, of 1183 Ashby Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Beaver Lake Road.

    He was the only son of Steven and Audrey Morey, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Brian Walden said.

  • More than special

    Senior Night is supposed to be special but that adjective might not be sufficient to modify the kind of finish for Anderson County wrestling last Wednesday night.

    Trailing 38-27 with two bouts remaining, Bearcats Travis Kaelin (215 pounds) and Dylan Hughes (heavyweight) recorded rare pins to upset 17th-ranked Harrison County 39-38. Kaelin, a freshman, and Hughes, a junior, gave the Anderson seniors a big send off in their final home meet.

    The victory was perhaps the biggest of the year for the Bearcats as they prepare for the regional meet, set for Feb. 14 at Fort Knox.

  • Man leaps to death from bridge

    The death of a Lawrenceburg man who jumped Wednesday afternoon from the Tyrone Bridge was confirmed as a suicide, the Anderson County Coroner’s office confirmed Monday afternoon.

    Jeffrey L. Wainscott, 43, of 207 Suzanne St., was pronounced dead shortly after rescuers with the Anderson County Fire Department and EMS recovered his body from the Kentucky River.

    An autopsy performed the followed day revealed that Wainscott died from blunt force trauma that resulted from his nearly 300-foot fall from the bridge.
