  • Family loses home; candles could be cause

    A local family lost its home in a fire last Thursday.

    The home of Richard and Jackie Davenport, located at 1840 Bonds Mill Road, was a total loss, said Anderson County Fire Chief Mike Barnes.

    An official cause has not been named, but Barnes said he has an idea of how the fire started.

    “I can’t say with 100 percent certainty, but we’re leaning toward candles,” he said.

    “With so many people with their power off, we’re really lucky we didn’t see more of that.”

  • The coach on the floor

    CINCINNATI — Daniel Drury won’t be winning any all-conference or All-American awards any time soon, but he’s first team all-winner.

    The box score from Asbury College’s game at Cincinnati Christian last Thursday tells the story of a nondescript 11 minutes of action – No points, two rebounds, no assists and an unforced turnover –  for the junior guard from Lawrenceburg.

    Not that Drury really cared. All he saw was the 83-73 win. “We got it going late,” Drury said with a huge smile.

  • Winter weather strikes again; Bearcat, Lady Cat games canceled

    UPDATED, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1:20 p.m.

    Winter weather strikes again.

    The Anderson County High School basketball games scheduled for Tuesday night have been canceled due to weather conditions.

    The Bearcats game with Spencer County has been canceled. Because it is a 30th District Tournament seeding game, that game will be re-scheduled. A makeup date has not been set, but the schools are working to play the game Wednesday, Feb. 4 or Thursday, Feb. 5.

  • Weather continues to disrupt school sports schedules; Bearcat game at Simon Kenton canceled

    Weather continues to wreak havoc on Anderson County High School sports schedules.

    The Bearcats' basketball game at regional rival Simon Kenton, scheduled for Saturday night, has been canceled. The Lady Bearcats' game at district foe Eminence, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, has also been canceled.

    Friday's basketball double-header involving the Bearcats and Lady Bearcats at South Oldham was also canceled due to the weather conditions.

    South Anderson Water District has lifted the boil water advisory that was issued last week. No part of the water district is now under a boil water advisory. The water is safe to use.

  • ICE STORM 2009: City to accept storm debris Saturday

    The city of Lawrenceburg announced Thursday that it will have a truck at the city maintenance garage from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to accept debris from this week's storm.

    The collection site is available to any private citizen who lives within the city limits said Mayor Edwinna Baker.

    Contractors generally have their own sites for the debris, but private citizens are welcome to bring downed trees and tree limbs to the garage, which is located on Highway 44 behind Capital Family Physicians.

  • ICE STORM 2009: Powell: FEMA, debris rumors are false

    A couple of rumors regarding FEMA reimbursements and debris pick-up are circulating around Anderson County, but those rumors are not true, said EMS Director Bart Powell.

    There is a belief among some residents that if they buy a generator or other any other equipment, FEMA will reimburse them, Powell said. But this is not the case.

    "FEMA will not reimburse a private citizen for anything," Powell said.
