  • Judge denies lone student’s appeal to vote

    Lara Wheeler didn’t vote in yesterday’s election, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

    Wheeler was one of the 21 current and former students who attempted to register to vote through Anderson County High School, but whose registration cards were turned into the county clerk’s office four days too late.

    However, Wheeler was the only one from the group who decided to appeal the decision of the county’s board of elections in Anderson Circuit Court.

    Judge Charles Hickman sat on the bench to hear Wheeler’s appeal.

  • Better slow down

    The state’s transportation cabinet lowered the speed limit on U.S. 127 Bypass to 45 mph in front of the new elementary school, and drivers are just now finding out.

    Over the past week, multiple drivers have been pulled over, thinking that the limit jumped to 55 mph when they passed the park entrance heading north, and dropped at the same location when heading south.

  • Parents learning the joys of ‘No. 2’

    I never thought I could be so excited about someone going No. 2 — yes, that No. 2.

    But when it’s a dog and the act is happening outside instead of in your kitchen floor, living room or car, it’s darn near worth shouting about.

    Josh and I welcomed Lily, our 32-pound bouncing, baby yellow lab, into our home last week. She’s 5 months old, and for the next few years, she’s the closest thing to a baby we’re going to have. But as I’m finding out, having a dog is a lot closer to having a baby that one might think.

  • Seniors set to bid farewell

    Ten Anderson County football seniors will be playing their final home game when the Bearcats host Western Hills Friday, Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

    “This is a very special group,” Anderson coach Mark Peach said.

    “These guys as freshmen had a winning season at 4-3. We felt like this was a group we could start with and build with.

    “These guys have been an absolute pleasure to coach. I am so glad that we have an opportunity to recognize these special young men.”

  • Man dies at scene of one-car accident

    A Lawrenceburg man died last Tuesday night after the vehicle he was driving went off the road and into a ditch on Highway 44 in front of Capital Medical Group.

    Larry Garlen, 52, of 230 N. Main St., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Anderson County Deputy Coroner David Walden.

    It remained unclear Monday if Garlen was killed in the accident or if he suffered a heart-related incident while driving east on Highway 44.

    An autopsy revealed that Garlen suffered from severe coronary disease, Walden said.

  • High schoolers to be shut out Election Day

    Twenty-one current and former Anderson County High School students are in for a rude awakening when they show up at the polls Nov. 4.

    Those students apparently attempted to register to vote through the high school, but their registration cards were turned into the county clerk's office four days too late.

    The Anderson News was notified of the situation via e-mail. The author of that e-mail declined to be identified, but Anderson County Clerk Edith Hanks confirmed his story.

  • Denny defeats Stratton for county clerk

    Anderson County will seat the first Republican county clerk in its history after Jason Denny narrowly defeated Anthony Stratton in Tuesday night’s election.

    Denny, a magistrate with the Anderson County Fiscal Court, defeated Stratton, a former magistrate and judge-executive, by an unofficial total 5,275 to 5,142, on a day marked by busy polling places across Anderson County and the United States.

    “I said if I won by 100 votes I’d be tickled to death, and I am,” Denny said, moments after realizing he had won.

  • Marion stuns Bearcats on last second touchdown

     

    LEBANON -- Marion County's Bryson Bell corralled a 43-yard touchdown pass with 7.9 seconds to play to stun Anderson County 42-39 in Friday night football action.

    Bell wrestled Eric Miles' pass away from the Anderson defense to cap a wild shootout that had seen Anderson rally from an 18-point deficit. Jacob Russell's 33-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Combs with 1:43 to play gave Anderson a 39-35 lead, the Bearcats' first advantage of the night.

    "We had the game won but did not lock it down," said Anderson coach Mark Peach.

  • Oldham defeats Bearcats, takes district title

    Oldham County scored 29 unanswered points on its way to defeating host Anderson County 35-21 in a Class 5A, District 4 showdown Friday night.

  • COLUMN: Local hunters make large catches

    A lot of things are falling in October. Leaves, gas prices and the stock market but still not much rain.  The dry weather sure has made the deer and turkey woods crispy to say the least.

    The Lilly clan has not had much luck in the harvesting department but it hasn't been for lack of trying. We've all seen deer and turkeys just not much worth taking out of the population.
