    The declaration that a country boy can survive was really old news to Anderson County residents.

    Thirteen years before Hank Williams made millions off that statement, a group of Anderson County country boys did not just survive. They excelled.

    And when the city boys came to town, those country boys more than survived. They dominated.

  • Attitude adjustment

    NICHOLASVILLE - Even though his Anderson County football team allowed West Jessamine just 28 second half yards Friday, Mark Peach insisted neither he nor his coaching staff made any significant adjustments during intermission.

    "We didn't change a thing," he said.

    Well, maybe. The x's and o's stayed the same at least, but there was a change.

    "He and coach (Duane) Hammons tried getting under our skin a little bit," smiled running back B.J. Robinson.

  • Target: December

    Lawrenceburg's legion of skateboarders received some welcome news during Monday night's Lawrenceburg City Council meeting.

    The committee working to build a skate park said the project is "alive and well" and is closing in on having enough funds to get it built.

    Kaycie Len Carter spoke on behalf of the committee, saying that California-based skate park designer Kelly Saad, who has helped build parks and obstacles for skating icon Tony Hawk, is involved in designing Lawrenceburg's skate park.

  • Rail crossings to be shut down for short periods of time Tuesday

    Lawrenceburg Mayor Edwinna Baker announced Monday that railroad crossings throughout the county would be shut down for short periods of time on Tuesday.

    "They have told me that replacement rails and ties will be dropped and that the crossings should each be closed for about 15 minutes," Baker said. Baker added that she was also told that in about three to four weeks each crossing will be closed for longer periods as new rails and ties are set in place.

  • GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Lady Bearcats defeat Tates Creek

    Madison Carter scored a pair of first half goals and Rebecca Radcliffe turned in one of her finest games ever in the net as 21st-ranked Anderson County whipped No. 20 Tates Creek 3-0 in girls' soccer action Monday in Lexington.

    "I thought that we played our best since leaving pre-season team camp at Western Kentucky University," said Anderson coach Jason Earnest. "This was the team I was hoping we could be. We passed the ball extremely well and were really able to determine the pace of play and

  • Bearcats defeat West Jessamine

    NICHOLASVILLE -- B.J. Robinson's 78-yard scoring run one minute before halftime propelled Anderson County to a 35-12 win over host West Jessamine Friday night.

    Robinson's sprit down the left sideline energized a heavily favored but lethargic Anderson team that was clinging to a 14-12 lead.

    Robinson's jaunt was the first of his two touchdowns. The senior led Anderson with 140 yards rushing on 15 carries.

    "That run totally changed the complexion of the game," said Anderson coach Mark Peach.

  • County issues burn ban

    A ban on outdoor burning was issued Wednesday afternoon for all of Anderson County.

    "That means no burning at all," warned Anderson County Fire Chief Mike Barnes, who made the announcement after the decree was approved by Anderson County Judge-Executive Steve Cornish.

    Barnes said the ongoing lack of rain prompted the ban, along with a number of small grass fires that have flared up over the past couple of weeks.

    For all the grumbling and griping about local government, it's amazing that so few people are running for the available city council and school board seats this fall. There is zero competition for three school board seats, and only eight candidates (four of which are incumbents) gunning for six seats on the city council. At a time of year when yards are generally stuffed with signs begging for votes, I've spotted nary a one for school board or city council.

  • Love of links pushes team toward state berth

    When word got out that the Anderson County boys' golf team shot a 139 to defeat Mercer County at Harrodsburg's Bright Leaf golf course a few weeks back, the most common reaction reflected the genteel nature of the sport.

    "That's pretty good."

    Pretty good?

    "At Mercer, I have eight guys that shoot even par," Anderson coach Will Carlton said.

  • Second postal unit to open Thursday

    Beginning Thursday, Anderson County residents will have two locations at which to fulfill their postal needs.

    A new contract postal unit will open at noon on Sept. 4 at Cash A Check in the Markwell Center at 1004 Bypass South. However, this opening is a "soft opening," said Regina Decker, Lawrenceburg postmaster.

    A grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be the following Thursday, Sept. 11 at noon.

    The Markwell Center CPU will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9-2 Saturdays.
