  • Two charged with taking $1,200 in copper

    The Anderson County Sheriff's Department seized about $800 worth of copper Thursday night and charged two men with stealing that copper and more from Parkway Marathon on U.S. 127 Bypass, said Detective Bryan Taylor.

    David Woodard, of Burgin, and Jeffrey Coslow, of Harrodsburg, were charged with two counts each of felony theft by unlawful taking and one count each of felony criminal mischief.

    Each of the Class D felonies could carry a penalty of one to five years, Taylor said.

  • Girls pound Walton-Verona in semifinals

    SHELBYVILLE - If anything, Anderson County might have set its clock ahead by more than an hour Saturday night.

    That's how ready the Lady Bearcats were for the semi-final round of the Eighth Region Tournament Sunday afternoon.

    After two postponements because of the weekend's snow, Anderson quickly jumped on Walton-Verona, then delivered the knockout punch in the third quarter for a 76-48 romp at Shelby County High School.

  • Chamber starting to find its voice

    "Someone from the chamber's on line one," one of the front office folks here at the paper said over the intercom in my office. "She wants to talk to you."

    No stranger to getting an earful following harsh editorials, I picked up the phone figuring my latest anti-payroll tax diatribe in which I chastised the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce for its lack of an opinion on the issue had resulted in the paper being booted from the chamber.

    Instead of an angry voice, I heard a rather pleasant one telling me I was nominated to be on the group's board of directors.

  • Auxiliary, city to hold 10th annual egg hunt

    The 10th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and the city of Lawrenceburg, will be Saturday at the American Legion Fairgrounds on Broadway.

    Gates will open at 12:30 p.m., and the hunt will begin promptly at 1, said Pam Rice, auxiliary president for the Department of Kentucky.

    "We'll have 6,000 eggs stuffed with candy," Rice said. "The children will be divided up into four age groups, and there will be four money eggs and three prize eggs in each group."

    The eggs will pretty much cover the fairgrounds, Rice said.

  • Lady Bearcat dream ends in final minute of regional championship game

    SHELBYVILLE-- Simon Kenton's Jessica Farris came up with a steal and converted a three-point play with 1:08 to play, putting Simon Kenton ahead to stay in the girls' Eighth Region championship game played at Shelby County High School Monday night.

    Simon Kenton connected on 4 of 6 free throws in the final 32.6 seconds to take a 48-44 victory for the school's first Sweet 16 trip.

  • Lady Bearcats advance to regional championship game

    SHELBYVILLE -- Anderson County went on a 24-11 scoring spree in the third quarter to fuel a 76-48 win over Walton-Verona in the girls' Eighth Region tournament semi-finals Sunday afternoon at Shelby County High School.

    Anderson advanced to the regional championship game for the first time since 1978. Anderson will play Simon Kenton for the right to represent the Eighth Region in the girls' Sweet 16. The championship game will tip off at 7 p.m. Monday, March 10 at Shelby County.

  • Anderson County schools to release at 10:30 a.m.

    Anderson County schools are releasing at 10:30 a.m. today to get students home before the heaviest part of a winter storm hits, said Larry Basham, assistant superintendent.

    "We've been up since 3:30 watching TV, and we've been out to the ambulance service to check the radar," Basham said. "And this morning, we made the decision to go (to school). But it started snowing and sleeting, so we've made the decision to go home at 10:30."

    Basham said forecasts had predicted the weather would be worse this afternoon.

  • Girls' Eighth Region Tournament semifinals postponed to Sunday

    Because of the winter storm moving into the area, the girls' Eighth Region semifinal round, originally scheduled for Friday, March 7, has been postponed for a second time.

    The semifinals are now set for Sunday afternoon, March 9, with the championship game to be played Monday night, March 10.

    The revised schedule is

    Sunday, March 9

    Walton-Verona vs. Anderson County, 3 p.m.

    Simon Kenton vs. South Oldham, 4:45.p.m.

    Monday, March 10

    Championship game, 7 p.m.

    Fans are also reminded that Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday.

  • Gallatin ends Bearcat dream

    NEW CASTLE -- Gallatin County ended Anderson County's Sweet 16 dream with a 63-56 win in the first round of the boys' Eighth Region tournament Thursday night at Henry County High School.

    In a game that was tied at the half, Anderson opened a 32-25 lead midway through the third quarter, but Gallatin's Taylor Jones buried back-to-back 3-pointers to pull his team within 34-31. Jones later made a sensational flip just before the end of the third quarter to tie things.

    Nearly 1,500 patties pressed from over 240 pounds of sausage.

    Dozens of gallons of coffee, juice and milk.

    Cases of apples turned into a delectable dessert.

    By around noon March 15, that's the amount of food that will begin being digested after an estimated 700 people flock to the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club's annual pancake breakfast at Saffell Street Elementary School.

    That date will mark the 50th anniversary of the club's annual pancake breakfast, its largest annual fundraiser.
