  • SPORTS BLOG: Bearcats mighty impressive in Danville scrimmage

    Anderson County showed a glimpse of why the Bearcats and their fans are excited about the 2011 football season Friday night. Anderson defeated Danville 41-35 in a scrimmage at Admiral Stadium.

    You read that right. Anderson defeated perennial state power Danville in a scrimmage.

    The scrimmage was only three quarters with the clock running before the junior varsity teams went at it for two sets of 10 plays each. Anderson won that segment, too, three touchdowns to one.

  • Russell on the sidelines, for now

    LEXINGTON – If there was any doubt in Jacob Russell’s mind where he had chosen to pursue his dream, it was erased last Friday.


    A throng of over 100 media members, toiling for outlets from the Big Sandy to the Mississippi, converged on Commonwealth Stadium for the University of Kentucky’s annual Media Day. Every form of electronic and print media was represented, most looking for the established stars and many asking the same questions over and over even though the Wildcats finished just 6-7 in 2010.

  • GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEW: Lady Bearcats hoping tradition never graduates

    Senior Night a year ago was a sad night for Anderson County girls’ soccer when they said good-bye to eight seniors. But 10 months later, Lady Bearcat coach Jason Earnest is smiling.


    He did not say farewell to a winning tradition.


    Despite seeing eight seniors depart – six are on college rosters this fall – Earnest almost looks like a man that knows he has something good up his sleeve.

  • BOYS SOCCER PREVIEW: Bearcats looking to solve a soccer mystery

    Anderson County boys’ soccer might be one of those mysteries that takes a while to solve in 2011.

    Graduation claimed 80 percent of the Bearcats’ scoring from a year ago and almost 75 percent of the assists from a team that finished 13-8-1 but was eliminated in the 25th District Tournament semifinals.

    When asked about the strengths of his team, Anderson coach Brett Morris said, “Ask me again in a month. Right now, we’re making a ton of mistakes, but our resolve is good.”

  • Central Kentucky Batcats finish second in USSAA World Series

    The Central Kentucky Batcats 12-and-under softball team finished runner-up in the 12B USSSA World Series, held in Orlando, Florida the week of July 24-30. The World Series featured 66 teams from 22 states.

    In pool play, the Batcats beat Georgia Easton Elite, 4-1, and Florida Bartow Intimidators, 10-1, but lost to Louisiana Red Stick 007s, the eventual champions, 4-1, to claim second seed in their pool.

  • Squirrel season kicks off fall hunting Aug. 20

    The first hunting season of the fall opens soon.


    Kentucky’s fall squirrel season, a 192-day split season that kicks off the calendar of fall hunting, opens on Aug. 20 and continues through Nov. 11. The season opens again Nov. 14 and runs through Feb. 29, 2012.


    The daily bag limit is six squirrels.


    Ben Robinson, small game biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, said the outlook for the season is excellent.

  • Lady Bearcats look solid in pre-season

    The Anderson County volleyball team looked strong in scrimmages last week in preparation for their season opener against Collins, played Monday after press deadlines.


    Anderson swept Estill County and Western Hills in their final tuneups for the season. The Lady Bearcat varsity defeated Estill 25-19, 27-25 and beat Western Hills 25-22, 25-12. The Anderson junior varsity got past Estill 21-14, 21-14 and beat Western Hills 16-21, 21-9, 15-9.


    The Lady Cat frosh beat Estill 21-5, 21-7 and then beat Western Hils 21-9, 21-8.
