  • THE SPORTS BUZZ for July 22: How can travel teams be “frustrating, humbling and beneficial at the same time?”

    Over the last three weeks, I have used the sports pages of The Anderson News to examine the travel team explosion in youth sports. These kind of teams have been around, it seems, forever in the form of American Legion baseball and a myriad of softball teams, fast-pitch and slow-pitch. There have been elite teams in practically all sports for many years, but it seems that over the past 10-15 years, there has been an explosion of growth and that players are starting younger and younger.

    I am not sure what to make of that.

  • Sports training injuries now seen as a major concern

    Chances are that you'll never see a pitcher's duel like the one Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn staged in San Francisco back on July 2, 1963.

    They kept battling for 16 innings before Willie Mays hit a one-out home run off Spahn to give the Giants a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Braves.

    Sixteen innings and not a single pitch came out of the bullpen.

  • COLUMN: Still learning life’s lessons

    At 24 and a little over two full years out of college, I still consider myself a student — of life, if nothing else.

    I hope I never stop learning because, as Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

  • Dentist charged with two DUIs in week

    A local dentist was charged twice in one week for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police reports.

    Dr. Dana Dahlen, 62, whose dental office is located at 311 S. Main St., was charged June 30 by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and again July 6 by the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

    Dahlen registered a .27 on a Breathalyzer test, nearly 3 1/2 times the legal limit, when arrested by the sheriff’s department, according to an arrest report.

  • South Anderson lifts boil water advisory

    The South Anderson Water District on Saturday lifted the boil water advisory for part of its service area, according to a news release.

    The advisory was issued on Friday and affected all customers from approximately 2040 Bardstown Road (close to the Highway 62 water station) to Hickory Grove Road, and customers on Beaver Lake, Ballard Road, Bear Creek Road, Mill Creek Pike, Fox Creek/Goshen roads and Paxton Road.

    “It” is gardening, and Anderson County is absolutely blooming this year with green thumbs.

  • County suspends recycling following wreck

    Anderson County has suspended its recycling program after the truck used to collect items was destroyed in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon, Judge-Executive Steve Cornish’s office announced.

    The truck was attempting to take a left off Highway 62 onto Primrose Lane near the golf course when another vehicle attempted to pass and slammed into the side of the truck.

  • City gets grant for skate park

    Finally.

    Members of the local skate park committee, city officials and community members who have donated to the skate park cause will finally see the fruits of their labor.

    Lawrenceburg has been selected to receive a $45,000 matching Land and Water Conservation Fund grant that will be used to fund the construction of a skate park, Mayor Edwinna Baker announced at Monday night’s city council meeting.

    The skate park committee has raised the matching $45,000, for a total of $90,000.

  • Relay for Life kicks off Friday

    The eighth annual Anderson County Relay for Life is set to begin Friday night at 6.

    The event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, runs through 6 a.m. Saturday.

    Over 20 teams will be walking around the track at the American Legion fairgrounds and city park in an effort to raise $113,000. Last year’s event raised $108,690.

    The event has continued to grow since it started in 2002, organizers said.
