    SPORTS BUZZ for July 1: What were some of the best individual performances by Anderson County athletes this year? 

    The 2008-09 school year was one of the best in Anderson County sports history, without a doubt.  There were some great, great performances through the year by individuals and teams.  I am going to list some of the best that I saw.  I simply cannot go to every event and missed some of the great moments, but here are some I will not forget.

  • Looking to repeat

    Hunted or hunter?

    For Anderson County basketball, it could be a lot of both in 2009-2010. Hunted, since the Bearcats are the defending Eighth Region champions and return three starters and some players that played key reserve roles.

    Hunter since Anderson will not the the obvious favorite – that honor will go to arch-rival Shelby County – and the Bearcats have to fill some major holes, including the ones left by all-stater C.J. Penny and starting guard Landon Jenkins.

  • Boat safely during holiday weekend

    More boaters will be on Kentucky waters during the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend than at any other time of year. Families will head to the water to fish, tube, water ski and enjoy a long weekend away from work. Boats full of vacationing friends will navigate crowded waters to find the best spot to watch fireworks. In the midst of all this fun and festivity, it’s easy to forget that the Independence Day holiday is often the year’s busiest and most congested weekend on the water.

  • COLUMN: A year to celebrate

    The note Will Carlton handed me carried just a simple question.

    “Best two or three years in school history?” he asked back on Feb. 27.

    The question was a good one at a great time. A few feet from us, the Anderson County basketball teams, plural, were celebrating victories over Shelby County to win the 30th District tournaments. For the Bearcats, it was the second title in three years and the third in seven. But for the Lady Bearcats, it broke a 31-year drought.

  • EDITORIAL: Revisions needed for protection orders

    Let’s be clear about one thing here: the blame for the death of the 21-month-old child who was shot by his father last month rests solely with the man who pulled the trigger before killing himself.

    That was a tragedy of epic proportions for the family, and our hearts go out to each and every one of them.

    Left behind are myriad questions, including why the child was removed from his mother’s custody.

    Welcome to the teen portion of The Anderson News.

    Thank you for taking the time to read this. It’s something you will enjoy and something aside from what most of you would say is boring news you don’t care about.

    For this first column I’m going to introduce myself and tell you how I got this opportunity.

    My name is Brooke Tindall. I am a teenager who lives in the country part of Anderson County. I am a member of Freedom Baptist Church and love going to church and being a Christian.

  • Wife, husband indicted on meth charges

    A Lawrenceburg couple was indicted June 16 by the Anderson County Grand Jury on several methamphetamine charges.

    Jeanie Bruner, who was arrested Friday, is charged with first-degree manufacturing methamphetamine (enhanced), which is a class A felony; first-degree possession of a controlled substance (enhanced); first-degree possession of drug paraphernalia, which is a class A misdemeanor; and possession of a defaced firearm, which is a class A misdemeanor, according to Anderson County Sheriff’s Det. Bryan Taylor.

  • Cable sheds more jobs

    General Cable confirmed Tuesday morning that 23 employees will be laid off July 13.

    Once the county’s largest private employer with nearly 300 workers, General Cable has been shedding jobs for the past several years. This latest reduction, which includes 19 hourly employees, leaves the company with 103 workers, according to Lisa Lawson, General Cable’s vice president of corporate communications.

    The company has struggled in recent years as telecommunications companies move away from traditional cable products.

  • Trimble takes fair crown

    Only one word could sum up the way Samantha Trimble felt as she heard her name announced Monday night as this year’s Miss Lawrenceburg Fair and Horse Show: “Thrilled!”

    “I’m so excited,” said Trimble, the 18-year-old daughter of Kelley and Terry Trimble. “There were seven beautiful girls up there, and I’m thrilled to be chosen (as the winner).”

    Apparently, she was thrilled and thankful.

    The first thing she did after leaving the pageant stage was thank the judges.
