    Five men received calls from the local Selective Service Board, according to Mrs. Sue B. Cloyd, clerk.
    Johnny Kavanaugh Cunningham, a volunteer, will be inducted and four — George W. Jenkins, Paul T. Rucker, Bobby S. Sutton and Randall G. Stratton, were to report for physical examinations.

    The young people of Lawrenceburg Christian Church were in charge of the regular services Sunday in observance of youth Sunday.

    Burkhead named to University of Kentucky Dean’s List
    Dillon Burkhead of Lawrenceburg was named to the University of Kentucky College of Engineering Dean’s List for the 2012 fall semester.
    Burkhead is a senior at the University of Kentucky
    According to a news release, a student must be a full-time and have a GPA of 3.6 or above to be named to the Dean’s List.

    Judge Donna Dutton heard the following cases during Anderson District Court proceedings on Dec. 20, 2012.
    Robert Glanz, disposition, trafficking in marijuana (less than eight oz.) – pleaded guilty, sentenced to 30 days (conditionally discharged one year), $200 to Anderson County Drug Interdiction Fund, $253, installment/deferred payment Mar. 28.
    Larry W. Goodlett, Jr., diversion completion, second-degree criminal trespassing – diversion successful, dismissed.

  • Two busted for stealing scrap metal

    Two people were arrested last Monday after police say they were caught trying to steal scrap metal from a location on Hammond’s Creek Road.
    Arrested were Daniel J. King, 37, of 246 Woodhill, Frankfort, and Brandy N. Woods, 36, of 104 Parker Place, Georgetown. Both are charged with theft by unlawful taking and third-degree criminal trespassing, according to citations issued by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

  • King on state pension fix: ‘There will be a lot of mad people’

    At least 1,200 state government retirees living in Anderson County are holding their collective breath as the legislature weighs how to fix a pension fund that could be bankrupt four years from now.
    The pension system, by some estimates underfunded by as much as $20 billion, is teetering on the brink of solvency and legislators are working on a plan they say could save it for years to come.

  • Betrayal, anger over proposed state pension bill

    The editor of The Anderson News contacted me Friday afternoon and asked if I had anything to say about a pending bill about the state pension system.
    The pension destruction bill eliminates the cost of living adjustment for retirees and creates a new inferior pension plan that does absolutely nothing to address the unfunded liability.

  • Green Christmas equals a snowy Easter

    Wow. A 50-degree drop in temperature is pretty radical, especially when it is within 48 hours. I’m thinking Mother Nature just pleased everyone.
    Wimps to the cold, like me, loved those warm days, and those who embrace the cold, got plenty. Almost three months ago (Nov. 7), I wrote about my winter predictions. Let’s see how I’ve done so far.

  • All quiet on the Interstate

    The most frightening sound is silence.
    Especially four hours of silence.
    Sometimes, during a game of hypotheticals, I like challenge myself to choose what traditional sense I would be able to live without, one I wouldn’t miss more than the others.  
    Smell. Taste. Touch. Sight. Sound.
    Last Thursday night, as I was caught in the hard place between moving forward on icy roads or driving my car in a ditch, was no game.
