  • Praying for a miracle - again

    Eight years ago, Brianna Borwig experienced what her family calls a miracle — today, they’re praying for a second one.

    Brianna, now 12, was diagnosed in 2000 at the age of 4 with an inoperable brainstem tumor. She underwent radiation, but doctors said the tumor was still growing and that there was “no hope,” according to Brianna’s mother, Kim.

    Doctors recommended that Brianna go through chemotherapy to “buy time,” Kim said.

  • Column: Is Obama the devil? Carlson answers reader’s question

    Remember Jeff Johns’ letter to the editor in last week’s paper? The one in which he challenged me to weigh in on the opinion of some of his relatives that President Obama is actually the devil incarnate?

    To that challenge I harken back to a comment then-candidate Obama gave when a preacher of national renown asked him about his position on abortion. Like Obama said, that is “above my pay grade.”

  • Police investigating after Turner sub dismissed

    A substitute teacher was dismissed from a classroom at Robert B. Turner Elementary School last Wednesday because of “inappropriate and unprofessional behavior,” said Anderson County Schools Superintendent Kim Shaw.

    “Her behavior and actions weren’t what we expect from teachers and substitute teachers,” Shaw said. “She is no longer on the substitute teacher list in the district.”

  • Bearcats one step from Sweet 16

    NEW CASTLE -- Anderson County limited Owen County to nine second half points as the Bearcats posted a 45-28 win in an Eighth Region tournament semifinal game Monday night at Henry County High School.

    Trailing a dangerous club 19-17 at the half, Anderson scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to virtually stamp their ticket to the regional championship game.

  • Simon Kenton ends Lady Bearcat dream

    CRESTWOOD -- Simon Kenton dominated Anderson County from the outset, ending the Lady Bearcats' Sweet 16 dreams with a 67-40 win in the Eighth Region championship game Saturday at South Oldham High School.

    Simon Kenton jumped to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes and rolled to its second consecutive regional title game win over the Lady Bearcats. “They came out focused and were clicking on all cylinders both offensively and defensively,” said Anderson County coach Tony Kays.

  • Arson alleged in Center Street fire

    UPDATED MONDAY 5:45 P.M. — A Lawrenceburg woman is in custody after allegedly setting her grandmother's Center Street home on fire Sunday night and fleeing the scene.

    Cheryl Brogan, 41, of 309 Center St., was arrested following a traffic accident in Arkansas and is charged with first-degree arson. Other charges are pending.

    Kentucky State Police spokesman Ron Turley said Brogan was a caregiver for her grandmother, Janet Scroggins, 81, who owns the home.

  • Lady Bearcats move on to regional final

    CRESTWOOD – The Anderson County girls' basketball team exploded early to advance to the Eighth Region tournament championship game for the second consecutive year.

    The Lady Bearcats built an unbelievable 25-3 halftime lead, then cruised to a 52-28 romp over host South Oldham on Friday night. The Lady Bearcats were never as much as tied and held South Oldham without a field goal in the first half.

    Tiffany Davenport led Anderson with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while seventh-grader Eriel McKee scored 10 points and snared 10 rebounds.

  • Bearcats defeat North Oldham, advance in regional tournament

    NEW CASTLE – Anderson County owned the final six minutes to defeat North Oldham 52-42 in the first round of the Eighth Region tournament at Henry County High School on Wednesday night.

    Tied at 35, Anderson coach Glen Drury called timeout with 6:07 to play. Twenty-two seconds later, Jacob Russell scored in the lane to give the Bearcats a lead they never relinquished.

    Anderson held the high-scoring Mustangs to 35 points below their average. “That is our trademark,” said Drury.

  • Bearcats at head of 8th Region class

    All season long, the consensus has been that Anderson County should be at the head of the class when it comes to the boys’ Eighth Region title chase.

    And that consensus has been that two teams, Shelby County and North Oldham, are the biggest threats to Anderson’s first trip to the state tournament since 1997.

    Little has happened to change anyone’s mind.
