  • Bearcats at head of 8th Region class

    All season long, the consensus has been that Anderson County should be at the head of the class when it comes to the boys’ Eighth Region title chase.

    And that consensus has been that two teams, Shelby County and North Oldham, are the biggest threats to Anderson’s first trip to the state tournament since 1997.

    Little has happened to change anyone’s mind.

  • Education, with a twist

    Gov. Beshear’s visit last week to discuss early childhood education sparked an interesting conversation here in our office.

    Granted, no one on either side of this issue pretends to know a fraction of what it really takes to publicly educate a child, and we’re sure this concept certainly would not pass muster with state and federal education czars so deeply invested in the current system.

    Instead, the following is more of a “throw it on the wall, see what sticks” sort of scenario, but one that drew raves from some, raspberries from others.

  • Sunday could be biggest day of the year

    There will be no opening taps, 3-pointers, slam dunks or nutty fan sections, but Sunday might just be the biggest day of the year in high school basketball.

    At least for Anderson County, both the Bearcats and Lady Bearcats, the most important moment of their quests for a state tournament berth will be when coaches Glen Drury and Tony Kays, or someone else in the Anderson contingent selects the pill that will determine where the teams will be bracketed in the Eighth Region tournament.

    Hey, Carlson, is Obama the devil or not?

    To the editor:

    Mr. Carlson;

    You have supplied everyone with some needed comments and views about local issues. But you haven’t expressed your opinion openly about our current president on the first page of the editorial section, sir.

    [Some of my relatives] have expressed their view, in private, that Barack Obama is the devil incarnate. Mr. Carlson, could you please disabuse them of this quaint notion about our president — about this very bright and well-meaning man?

  • Column: TV shows a wake-up call for my old Kentucky home

    A lot has been said about Eastern Kentucky over the past month or so, and I’ve taken notice. How could I not?

    Eastern Kentucky is home to me. More specifically, the mountains of Pineville are home to me.

    Pineville has been in the news on several occasions at the state level, but most of the national focus has been on Harlan and Hazard and other towns in between. In a sense, that’s still home to me. My daddy still drives to Harlan every day for work, and I’ve played many a softball game in Hazard.

  • Column: Planning is key to planting successful garden this spring

    I love sunsets. Watching our sun spin out of our sight is a beautiful thing.

    We don’t think about our earth spinning around at over 18 mph while it travels at over 1,000 mph around its axis, but we are doing just that. Amazing, isn’t it? Going that fast without even realizing it should remind us that time is passing quickly and planting time will be upon us before we know it.

  • In their blood

    FRANKFORT – Wrestling just gets in your blood.

    It might be hard for those who equate one of the world’s oldest sports with Vince McMahon’s pyrotechnics at WWE to understand.

    But the stage at the Frankfort Convention Center last week was no showtime. It was simply four mats, each with two combatants going at it for a chance to move on until a champion is crowned.

    “When you are on the mat, it’s just you and the other guy,” is a mat mantra.

    Any Eighth Region girls’ basketball team that wants to make it to Bowling Green is going to have to make a circuitous trip.

  • Will storm debris ever be picked up?

    Getting storm debris picked up under a state contract continues to be a problem in Anderson County.

    A contractor who was supposed to pick up debris beginning Monday was nowhere to be seen as of Tuesday afternoon.

    “No crew has showed up yet,” Judge-Executive Steve Cornish said. “We haven’t heard anything from them.”

  • Fourth-grader wins countywide spelling bee

    Every time Clayton Fields stepped up to the microphone Thursday night, a smile spread across his face.

    And every time Clayton stepped up to spell a word, he got it right.

    Clayton, a fourth-grader at Emma B. Ward Elementary School, said his positive attitude at the Anderson County Championship Spelling Bee was part of the reason he ultimately became the champion.

    “It definitely helped,” he said while smiling.

    Clayton’s winning word was “benefactor,” and he spelled it correctly, loud and proud.
