Hoping this time the outcome will be different, the Lawrenceburg City Council is applying for a grant to fund a skate park.

The city has applied for the Land and Water Conservation Fund twice before, but officials have high hopes Lawrenceburg will receive the grant this year.

At a special called meeting last Thursday, the council voted unanimously to apply for the grant.

If awarded the grant, the city would receive $45,000 to use to build a skate park. The city would be responsible for matching the grant either monetarily or in-kind.

One Lawrenceburg resident is getting ready to compete on a national stage in front of thousands, if not millions, of viewers — but it’s not a human resident.

Dugan, a 4 1/2-year-old Kerry Blue Terrier owned by George Geoghegan, will be shown at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York this month.

“This is the one (dog) show where all of them are champions,” Geoghegan said.

CINCINNNATI — It was after a loss that Christy Gemmell showed she could be a big-time winner.

“I saw Christy in the (Eighth) regional final last year and she really took it hard when Anderson County lost,” remembers Asbury College women’s basketball coach Bart Flener. “I liked that. She does not like to lose and she wants to do something about it.”

For Gemmell, though, that last-minute loss to Simon Kenton meant no more opportunities to do something about it at the high school level.

Anderson County will be trying to make some major changes on Friday night.

The Lady Bearcats will be hosting Shelby County in a game that will decide the top seed in the 30th District Tournament, which will be held the last week of February.

While the Lady Bearcats and Lady Rockets don’t generate the same fan interest as the schools’ boys’ teams, it is still the biggest game on either team’s schedule.
