  • Cable ready?

    Workers at the county’s largest private employer will decide this week if they want to form a union at General Cable.

    The vote for all non-management employees is scheduled for Thursday and Friday at General Cable, located on U.S. 127 Bypass. A simple majority is all that is required for it to pass.

    “It’s going to be extremely close,” said Earl Riley Jr., a 30-year employee who helped organize the effort to join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). “I can’t tell one or the other which way it will go.”

  • Wind chill advisory issued for Anderson County

    A wind chill advisory has been issued for Anderson County from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

    Arctic air is headed toward the area and will bring plunging temperatures after midnight, according to the weather service. The cold air will also bring wind, which may gust as high as 30 mph at times.

    Temperatures are expected to fall into the lower teens across the Bluegrass area, and the resulting wind chills could fall toward -10 F.

  • Second half surge pushes Bearcats past Owen

    OWENTON – Anderson County used a 9-0 run to open the second half, then went on to register an impressive 67-49 win over host Owen County Thursday night.

    Anderson, which improved to 11-4, pulled away from a 25-24 halftime lead to lead 34-24 in just over two minutes. Anderson went on to outscore Owen 22-6 in the third quarter and was never seriously threatened again.

    The lead grew to as many as 22 points on two occasions before Owen pulled within 12 inside the final 90 seconds.

  • Young heroes spark girls past Oldham

    BUCKNER – An unlikely upset bid ended because of some unlikelier heroes Friday night.

    Anderson County overcame a four-point deficit in the final three minutes to stave off Oldham County 45-40 Friday night. Anderson, now 10-1, probably would have gone down if not for the play of freshman Sydney Brown and seventh-grader Eriel McKee.

    Coming off the bench, Brown scored 10 points, eight in the fourth quarter of her best outing of the season.

  • Sims takes Denny’s seat on court

    During the next two years as the magistrate for the 4th District, Buddy Sims hopes to provide Anderson County residents with quality service — despite a tighter budget.

    “I want to take my years of experience and find different ways to do more,” Sims said. “I want to give them (county residents) the same or better service, even though I know we’ll be working with less money.”

  • More regional foes awaiting Bearcats

    A pair of teams perceived to be threats to Anderson County’s top-dog status in the Eighth Region await the Bearcats in the coming week.

    Anderson travels to a puzzling Owen County team Thursday, Jan. 15. A year ago, Owen created a bit of a buzz within the region, winning eight straight in the final weeks of the season and posting an 18-10 record.

    The Rebels nearly upset eventual champion Shelby County in the Eighth Region Tournament’s first round as well.

  • Concerns linger following water advisory

    A weekend-long boil water advisory issued by the city ended Sunday morning, but questions remain regarding how effectively residents are being notified.

    Two of the city’s main water lines had to be shut down to make repairs late Friday afternoon, forcing city officials to declare the advisory.

    City Clerk Robbie Hume said his office contacted each of the city’s restaurants and other locations that serve tap water or use it in beverages they sell.

  • No excuses on boil water letdown

    The lead letter to the editor on this page speaks poorly of city officials and The Anderson News.

    Frankly, each of us has failed in our missions: the city by not using all available resources to notify the public of a potential health problem; the paper by not effectively doing its job to find out about those problems and let you know.

    Rest assured that will not continue to happen on the newspaper’s part and, hopefully, the city’s.

  • Getting a 'Wii' bit more fit

    Exercise and video games are two things I’ve never really been able to get in to.

    I know that exercising for the sake of exercising is something that everyone should do, but I’ve never been able to continuously, on some sort of schedule make myself exercise just because it’s good for me. Back in high school, I did plenty of exercise disguised in the form of cheerleading practice, but that was because it was exercise in disguise. I had to do it or be a bad cheerleader, and the latter just wasn’t going to happen.
