  • Proposal pegs Parkway as spot for industrial use

    A map proposing locations for industrial, commercial and residential construction will be discussed Monday night during a public hearing.
    Developed by a group charged with updating the county’s comprehensive plan, the map includes a recommendation that the area near the intersection of the Bluegrass Parkway and US 127 be developed for a future industrial park.

  • Things changed, but stayed the same

    Forget that the old Anderson County-Shelby County rivalry was supposed to have died. Forget the fact that Collins High took most of Shelby's athletes when the new school opened in August.


    None of that will matter when Shelby visits Anderson tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 2. There won't be a Sweet 16 berth on the line. It won't even decide the top dog in the 30th District, like the old rivalry did.


    But tonight is simply the most important basketball game of the season for the Anderson County boys’ basketball team.

  • Another close one goes against Bearcats

    Experience is nearly always the best teacher, but it is sometimes cruel.


    “I am fine,” Anderson County boys’ basketball coach Glen Drury said Friday after his team dropped a 62-55 decision to visiting South Oldham. “I am fine, but I might not have been when I first started coaching.”


    He’s learned that things happen. He believes that a team can fight through and get better or it can pack things in and start getting ready for the summer.

  • Anderson wrestlers have big day at Danville

    Anderson County’s wrestlers won four of five matches in its pool in the Admiral Duals, held Saturday at Danville High School. The Bearcats defeated Perry County Central, Newport, Boyle County and Harrison County, all by wide margins but fell to highly-regarded Wayne County 51-26.


    In a 68-12 romp past Boyle, Anderson’s only losses were in the 103- and 112-pound classes, where the Bearcats had no wrestlers. Anderson forfeited at 103 due to an injury to Cody Ward.

  • Swank gets no pay, but his calls of Anderson games are rich

    It is not exactly the same road Dick Vitale or Bill Raftery took to basketball stardom, but Steve Swank is doing just fine in Internet radio.


     A long-time coach, Swank took over the play-by-play duties for Bearcat and Lady Bearcat basketballjust before the current season started. A novice in his first gig behind the microphone, Swank proved to be a quick learner and got started when the Bearcats hosted Collins on Jan. 7.

  • Sports Briefs for Feb. 2

    God 1st youth basketball registrations set
    From staff reports
    God 1st youth basketball will be holding registrations on consecutive Saturdays, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Registrations will be held in the Simpson Center at Lawrenceburg United Methodist Church.
    Boys and girls, ages 3-12 (as of Oct. 1, 2010) are eligible to participate.
    The season will run from March 12 through April 23, with no games scheduled for April 9. There will be one game and one practice per week.

  • COLUMN: Only three weeks remain?

    Only three weeks remain?

    Three weeks left in the high school basketball season?

    Of course that depends on how long a team will be playing when everything gets down to the nitty-gritty in tournament time and the pretenders are separated from the contenders. Still, it has been a year that has gone by too fast.

    It seems like just a few days ago that I got an e-mail discussing girls' basketball in which the writer said, “I bet you are having a good time watching that Anderson girls' team, haven't you?”

  • Bearcats lose another squeaker

    Somewhere along the line, something will go right at the end of a basketball game for Anderson County.

    The Bearcats believe that. They have to believe it to fight through a stretch of misfortune that continued through last Tuesday. With the top seed in the 30th District Tournament on the line, the Bearcats came up just short.

    Again.

    For the sixth time in seven games, Anderson was on the wrong end of the score. Each time, the final margin was four points or less. The string continued Tuesday as heavily-favored Spencer County escaped with a 52-48 win on the Bearcats’ home court.
