  • Taking back my Sundays

    Well, folks, the Fantasy Football season is over, and despite my top-notch first half of the season, my team — the Flying Reporters — finished a mediocre fourth place right behind (you guessed it) my husband in third.

    I guess that’s what I get for gloating.

    Still, for a rookie team, the FRs had a good run, and just because the fantasy season is over doesn’t mean the real season is. Eight teams remain in the playoffs and I’m certainly looking forward to the Super Bowl on Feb. 1.

  • New year, new catalogues, choices aplenty

    Happy New Year! The new seed catalogues are here.

    Those of us addicted to gardening were getting pretty antsy for a fix. I got a chance to read through three of my new catalogues and I’m thrilled with the selections.

    Many of you may not start things from seed. Perhaps you don’t grow a big enough garden. Many of you grow just a few things in containers. Seeds are still a great way to start your garden when you want.

    We all know that we have a lot of winter yet to go before we turn that first shovel. It’s hard to wait.

  • Mason deserves a New Year’s miracle

    Curled up in his litter box inside the Anderson Humane Society, Mason has no idea how many people have made it their New Year’s resolution to find him a home.

    He has no idea that one picture of his scared little face has touched the hearts of local residents and people across the world.

    That’s right, Mason has cheerleaders all the way in Australia.

  • Knee down or not, football is changing at UK

    Notes written with my knee down …

    Over the years, some of the guys I have become acquainted with in Commonwealth Stadium have been Danny Wuerffel to Chris Doering and Marcus Randall to Devery Henderson.

    I have known Mark Higgs on first-and-goal, second-and-goal, third-and... oh, you get the idea. I remember Bernie Scruggs’ pitchout and Clyde Rudolph stretching and stretching but coming up inches short.

    And I was in the Georgia Dome when Marty Moore fumbled.

  • Bearcats outlast Shelby, take district lead

    Anderson County overcame a sluggish start to defeat 30th District rival Shelby County, 46-42 in a grind-it-out affair Saturday night at the Anderson gym.

    The teams have been ranked as the top two in the Eighth Region.

  • Every game is different as Cats favored over Shelby County

    It seems strange, but just to get things out of the way, Anderson County is considered a solid favorite over Shelby County when the teams get together on the basketball court Saturday night.

    Not that it really matters.

    The last three times the rivals have met, the underdog has come out on top.

    “Every game is different,” Anderson coach Glen Drury is fond of saying.

    Last Jan. 4, Drury made the statement moments after his team had defeated Shelby 60-53 in Shelbyville.

  • Scott County holds off Anderson challenge

    MOUNT STERLING – Top-ranked Scott County took the championship of the second annual Gateway Holiday Classic with a 64-49 victory over Anderson County at Montgomery County High School on Monday night.

    But the Cardinals were in a battle to the end.

    The final score does not indicate how close the battle really was.

    While Scott took the lead for good with a 6-0 spurt to end the first half, the Cardinals did not clinch things until the final two minutes.

  • Williams named all-state punter

    For a guy that did not know he would be playing football until just before start of the season, Sam Williams did just fine.

    A senior who joined the Anderson County High School team for the first time, Williams was named second team all-state punter by the Courier-Journal in the edition published on Christmas day.

    “I was real surprised when I saw my name on the second team,” said Williams, who averaged almost 34 yards a punt on 36 attempts. His longest effort was a 56-yarder in the season-opener at Madison Southern. Williams also put eight punts inside the 20.

    January

    The Anderson County boys’ basketball team wins at 15th-ranked Shelby County. It marks Anderson’s second straight win in Shelbyville, a feat no Anderson team has accomplished since the merger of Shelby County and Shelbyville high schools in the 1975-76 season.

    February

    Anderson County’s Sammy Isaacs is runner-up in the state high school wrestling tournament.... Heartland Christian upsets Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg in the KCSAA state championship game.
