Beneath the huge crowds, vocal student sections trying to outdo each other, neighbors and relatives talking major league smack and everything else surrounding Saturday’s Anderson County-Shelby County border war is a little reminder that two counties get worked up over a game.

There’s no question it has evolved into the biggest date on either team’s schedule. The post-season ramifications are enormous and bragging rights might be even bigger.

But it is still a game. No one knows that better than Brian Stivers.

A deputy detective with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department was taken to the hospital Friday after the patrol car he was driving slammed into an embankment on US 127 Bypass.

Deputy Detective Bryan Taylor was not seriously injured in the accident, but did receive a number of bumps and bruises, according to Sheriff Troy Young, who said Taylor was transported by ambulance to Frankfort Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.

It’s possible that a stray article or two with my byline will appear in some future edition of this newspaper, but today’s column will be the last one I write as an employee of The Anderson News.

This is my final week at the paper, as I’ve accepted a position in a different line of work and start my new job Jan. 5.

It seems impossible, but more than six years have passed since my first article was published back in August 2002. Since then, I’ve penned approximately 2,000 others.
