  • No tackling allowed, but Bearcats still roll

    With less than 30 seconds remaining in Anderson County’s 65-50 season-opening win over Garrard County on Monday night, Bearcat coach Glen Drury’s admonition to reserve guard Ben Walker might have summed up Anderson’s sporadic performance.

    “Ben, you can’t tackle ’em out here,” Drury quipped after Walker was called for an offensive foul under his basket.

    Drury drew chuckles from those seated near the Anderson bench and a huge smile from Walker, who is one of at least five Bearcats who had been playing football up until Nov. 21.

  • Lady Bearcats rout Ballard

    UPDATED Dec. 5 10:30 p.m.

    LOUISVILLE -- Lindsay Fultz ripped Ballard for 35 points as Anderson County routed the Louisville team 71-43 in girls' basketball action Friday night.

    Fultz riddled the Lady Bruins with slashing drives and soft jump shots as Anderson moved to 3-0 on the year. Tiffany Davenport added 15 points for the Lady Bearcats.

  • Late rally propels Bearcats past Casey; Gallatin game time changed

    A 13-0 run in the third quarter gave Anderson County the impetus to defeat Casey County Tuesday night in Liberty.

    Trailing 44-41, Anderson coach Glen Drury called a timeout where he made some adjustments in how the Bearcats were playing their man-to-man defense, forcing numerous Casey turnovers. Anderson senior Landon Jenkins buried a pair of 3-pointers during the decisive run.

    Anderson now 2-0, was led in scoring by Jacob Russell's 20 points. C.J. Penny added 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

  • The U.S. economy — fish or foul?

    Does anyone else find it more than a little bizarre that so many heretofore ardent capitalists have turned to a form of socialism to bail out Wall Street, big banking and possibly the big three auto companies?

    But that is exactly what has been happening since the massive financial meltdown began.

    And why is it that when poor folks receive government assistance the well-to-do label it as welfare, but those same moneyed people think it’s OK when their failing businesses receive welfare in the form of a government handout/bailout?

  • Fire damages Stringtown home

    A Stringtown home sustained major damage in a fire Monday morning at 1734 Harrodsburg Road.

    No one was home when the fire started, and its cause remains under investigation.

    “There are a couple of things we are looking at,” said Anderson County Fire Chief Mike Barnes. “We haven’t been able to pin it down and say for sure what we think it is.”

    The home was rented by Beverly Terry, who lived there with her children.

    God has a special mold from which he creates firefighters.

    There can be no other rational explanation for why people who otherwise appear completely sane and in command of their facilities would willingly enter burning buildings and risk their lives for, usually, the mere belongings of people they often don’t even know.

    So what drives these men and women from virtually every walk and station in life to show up at the local fire hall and volunteer?

  • A ‘heart of gold’

    Ask both his wife and his boss and they’ll tell you — Daniel “Danny” Gaines had a heart of gold.

    “He had an outgoing personality,” said Gaines’ wife, Crystal. “He’d do anything for anybody. If he had the means to do it, he would do it.”

    Gaines, of Frankfort, died unexpectedly Nov. 23. He had an enlarged heart. Born Nov. 28, 1974, he was 33.

  • TNA wrestles its way to Lawrenceburg

    Wrestling in towns across Kentucky is nothing new for Chris “Abyss” Park.

    “I came up wrestling in Kentucky,” said Abyss, who now lives in Independence. “I’ve been everywhere from Lexington to Louisville to Paris to Cynthiana to Georgetown.”

    This Saturday, Abyss — and many other Total Nonstop Action wrestlers — will add Lawrenceburg to his list.

    Eagle Lake Expo Center is hosting “TNA Live in Lawrenceburg” on Saturday night. Doors open at 6:30, and the event is set to begin at 8.

  • Lawrenceburg Christmas celebration begins Dec. 5

    The city of Lawrenceburg’s holiday season will officially kick off 6 p.m. Friday at Lawrenceburg Green with a remembrance ceremony, the lighting of a Christmas tree, and caroling led by Sand Spring Baptist Church music director Ellery Milburn.

    Refreshments will be provided by the Lawrenceburg Burgoo Festival Committee.

    The annual Christmas parade is scheduled for noon Saturday with John Allen Perry serving as grand marshal.
