  • Pancake breakfast, business expo are Saturday

    The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club will hold its 51st annual pancake breakfast Saturday morning at Saffell Street Elementary School.

    Also Saturday, the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its annual business expo at Eagle Lake.

  • Updates from state wrestling tournament

    UPDATED Saturday, Feb. 21, 11:25 a.m.

    FRANKFORT – Anderson County wrestlers Austin Dillow and Ben Joseph saw their bids for state tournament medals come up one match short Saturday. Both were eliminated from the KHSAA state wrestling tournament in the final match before the medal round. The tournament is going on at Frankfort Convention Center.

    Dillow dropped a decision to Woodford County's Robert Bracco at 103 pounds. Bracco scored on an early take down and controlled the rest of the match.

  • UPDATE: Debris collection to begin Monday

    UPDATE — A company has signed a state contract to collect storm-related debris after the first company that agreed to do so bailed out of its contract last week.

    Anderson County Judge-Executive Steve Cornish confirmed today that T and F Contractors is scheduled to begin picking up debris Monday, Feb. 23.

    The city and county announced last week that the state had approved a contract to have debris from the ice storm earlier this month picked at residences, saving homeowners from paying to have it removed or moving it themselves to two designed locations.

  • Franklin holds off Bearcats in season finale

    FRANKFORT -- Franklin County held on to defeat Anderson County 61-52 in the final regular-season game of the boys' basketball season Friday night.

    Playing before a packed house at Franklin County High School, Franklin shot to a 19-2 lead out of the gate, then turned back several furious Bearcat rallies for the win. Anderson cut Franklin's lead to five points on several occasions.

    Anderson's C.J. Penny led all scorers with 29 points. Anderson saw a 10-game winning streak snapped and is 19-5 heading into Tuesday's district tournament opener with Eminence. Franklin is 19-4.

  • Be prepared for a visit from Pep Le Pew

    I know Valentine’s Day is over but love is in the air. You can literally smell it, although, the aroma is not very pleasant.

    Pepe’ Le Pew is looking for love now, and that means we need to be alert.

    Here on the farm we have to be very alert. Since we currently have eight dogs that roam the hill, we have eight times the chances of getting up close and personal with the all too recognizable skunk.

    This very evening, as I typed, we had a too close encounter. Luckily, I got all eight inside in time.

  • Stripper gets five years for con job

    The stripper charged with stealing more than $60,000 from a 69-year-old Lawrenceburg woman will spend five years in prison.

    Glenda Jean Moore, 33, was sentenced last month, said Detective Bryan Taylor of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

    Moore will also have to pay restitution for her crimes, and although an exact amount has not been set, Taylor estimates she will be required to pay between $60,000 and $100,000.

    Moore was an acquaintance of the victim’s son, Taylor said.

  • Lawrenceburg’s ‘Abe’ wins Lincoln heritage award

    Jim Sayre of Lawrenceburg won the Richard Burks Lincoln Heritage Award last Thursday in Hodgenville.

    The award is given to an individual or organization in recognition of efforts to perpetuate the history of LaRue County and the ideals of Abraham Lincoln, according to Lincoln Days president Jeff Hughes.

    Sayre has spent 30 years promoting LaRue County as if it were his “real” birthplace, Hughes said.

  • Yeah, I’m one of those people

    You know those people who love their pets more than anything? The ones who treat Fido and Fluffy like their own flesh and blood? The ones who can relate everything in life back to the cutest thing little Spike did last weekend?

    I used to make fun of those people, but now I’m one of them.

    Josh and I have had our lovely Lily — a 50-pound, 7-month-old lab — since early November, and I can’t imagine our life without her.

    In fact, I had a little taste of that life this past weekend, and I didn’t care for it.

  • First Baptist musicians indicted

    Two Lawrenceburg men were indicted on felony charges last week by a Franklin County Grand Jury for what police say was their part in creating a fake commercial drivers license.

    Lance Roe, 28, apparently wanted the license to drive a bus for First Baptist Church, where he serves as an organist.

    Police say the church’s pianist, Michael Sivils, 45, assisted Roe in obtaining the license by altering a state computer system database to make it appear that Roe had passed a test to obtain the license.

  • Coaches, media don’t have to be best buds

    At least Glen Drury didn’t brush me off Friday night.

    Not that I expected him to, but it seemed like every other coach in Kentucky was beginning to do that last week.

    When Drury emerged from the visitors’ locker room at Lexington’s Dunbar High School to speak with me about the game, he prefaced his first remark with, “When I finally got in there...”

    Drury’s routine is to quickly shake hands with the opposing coach, head to his locker room to talk with his team, then unwind a few moments before talking with the local media.
