  • Levy County millage rate stays same

    Levy County's property tax millage rate will remain at its current rate - 7.4212 mills - for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1

    That's good news for property tax owners. But the bad news for Levy County is that employees won't get a raise and it will have to spend its entire emergency reserve fund, to balance a reduced budget at that tax rate.

  • LETTER: County remains out of industrial loop

    To the editor:

    Anderson County has been out of the industrial loop a long time, so the criticism of our local officials is unjust.

    Twenty-five years ago a few of us had a meeting with the Franklin County Economic Development committee. It recommended we come home and get six community-spirited business people with a genuine interest in the general welfare of all Anderson Countians and raise the funds to purchase the old Sherwood farm from the Greer brothers.

    Healthy, tanner, laden with bargains and looking forward to American tap water, 11 travelers from Anderson County High School recently returned from a trip to Mexico.

    In June, Brittany Van Hook, a 2007 graduate; Bethany Jefferies, a 2008 graduate; Noel Sutherland, a 2008 graduate, and his mom, Kim; incoming juniors Mark Lancaster, Erika Frye, Chelsea Watts, Melissa White and Tiffany Bales; and Spanish teacher Sylvia Hensley and her daughter, Carrie, visited Mexico City, Guanajuato, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.

  • COLUMN: Making a statement

    The cars have been converging on Anderson County High School again for a week now.

    Walking through a few stores in the last few days, I have seen Bearcat paraphernalia in much larger quantities than in recent years. I've seen everything from sweat pants to back packs. It might be a reaction to an unbeaten regular football season, two regional championship teams, a regional runner-up and several highly ranked teams.

  • LETTER: Lunsford protects Kentucky

    To the editor:

    The Bush administration and the Republican leadership in Congress have taken away the American dream. That is why I'll be supporting Bruce Lunsford for the U.S. Senate.

    He has the support of labor unions, which are a driving force in Kentucky politics. He is willing to work with all sides to get things done. Lunsford's agenda is progressive, focusing on universal health care, tax relief for the middle class instead of the wealthy, keeping the estate tax, making college more affordable and ending the war.

  • LETTER: City thanked for Relay support

    To the editor:

    We would like to express a public thank-you to Mayor Edwinna Baker and the city of Lawrenceburg for their enormous show of support for the Relay for Life event that took place at the City Park on July 11.

    The park was in fantastic shape and many city employees were there well before 7 a.m. on the day of the event, making sure that everything was taken care of.

  • COLUMN: Farewell, Lawrenceburg, it was a great summer

    My 10 weeks at The Anderson News were technically up last week, but I simply could not resist the chance to address the people of Anderson County one last time in my final column.

    I hope I have provided some food for thought over the summer, or at least conveyed my views clearly and succinctly. But now I am at a total loss of what to say about my experience as a whole.

  • Extension inches closer to taxing authority

    The Anderson County Extension Service is one step closer to being able to collect property taxes.

    During its meeting Tuesday night, the Anderson County Fiscal Court allowed a first reading of an ordinance that would give taxing authority to the extension service.

    Although the rates could change during a required second reading of the ordinance, magistrates proposed a tax rate that means property owners will pay an additional tax of $16 per $100,000 of assessed value.

  • COLUMN: Five-week hike ends in Virginia

    After backpacking about 260 miles over some of the toughest trails I've ever hiked, I decided to leave New England in search of some drier and, much as I hate to admit it, easier trail.

    So I headed to northern Virginia to fill in a 40-mile section that also includes a short section of West Virginia. After completing that section, I have now hiked the entire southern half of the 2,170-miles long Appalachian Trail, as well as another 440 miles in New England.

  • Football, softball registration scheduled

    Registrations for Anderson County Parks and Recreation youth football and softball will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Department office in the Stratton Building at 1026 County Park Road.

    Football divisions will be offered for grades 5-6 and grades 3-4. A non-contact division for second-graders also will be offered. Registration costs $60 for players in grades 3-6, $40 for second graders.
