  • Veteran to hike 7,000 miles across US

Troy Yocum took around 300,000 steps during his 130-mile hike to Lawrenceburg.

But for Yocum, that was just the beginning.

Yocum, an Iraq war veteran who served in the U.S. Army, set out to walk 7,000 miles — roughly 50 million steps — across America with a goal of raising much needed funds for military families.

Another part of his mission is to gather as many signatures from mayors and dignitaries as possible on a custom made Louisville Slugger baseball bat as a petition to support the “Day of the Deployed.”

  • County spends thousands on hotels

The Anderson County Fiscal Court has racked up thousands of dollars in hotel bills for overnight stays in Lexington and Louisville, along with over-the-limit and late payment charges to its credit cards.

An investigation into the fiscal court’s travel expenses was conducted by The Anderson News following recent comments in a sworn deposition made by a woman suing the county for sexual harassment.

  • Having fun is the name of the game

Chances are that few played in the NCAA basketball tournament last month with a stated desire of “beating my best score.”

You can also  bet that few head to a bowl game with the stated desire to “just have fun.”

And chances are that you won't find many claiming to relax in a sport where perfection is found in an area eight centimeters across. For the metric system-challenged, that is just a bit more than three inches.

  • Lady Bearcats play long ball, roll past Shelby

Anderson County left little doubt about 30th District softball supremacy on Monday night. At least for now the Lady Bearcats did with a 9-2 thrashing of visiting Shelby County.

But the Lady Bearcats were not ready to make that statement, yet.

“The only thing that matters is the district (tournament),” said Anderson senior Lauren Brown, who remembered that Shelby routed the Lady Bearcats in the district finals last year.

  • COLUMN: Holt's Derby dream lives on despite tragedy

The countdown had already started but it was to begin in earnest on Saturday night.

    Fifty-three weeks, 371 days until May 7, 2011.

Everyone in Lawrenceburg knew that was the date one of our own could be living a real-life Hollywood story. A small Anderson County farm, with a name inspired by the owner’s son, would be saddling up a horse in the Derby.

Having a horse with the bloodlines that say you might just be on the winner’s stand with the governor? That’s Hollywood off the charts.

  • Shelby rolls past error-prone Bearcats

SHELBYVILLE -- Shelby County took advantage of six Anderson County errors and made Bearcat pitching pay for seven walks and four hit batsmen in posting a 16-6 win in district baseball action Friday night.

Shelby took firm control of the regular-season 30th District race and has the inside track on the top seed in the district tournament, to be played in late May.

  • Saturday Little League games canceled
