  • LETTER: Teach our youth about respect, not selfishness

    To the editor:
    It’s unfortunate that we as a country have to endure so much as a free republic, referencing the lives taken (young and old) in Arizona from a mad man. When reflecting back to our forefathers, founders and ancestors — they engaged in battle, waging war for our freedom today. We knew their cause, their struggles — what be ours? We have become so divisive, and we reside in the “United” States.

  • LETTER: Lousy snow removal prompts change in vote

    To the editor:
    My family has lived in rural Anderson County for years. Never have we had a problem with our county roads like we have had this winter.
    On several occasions, my neighbors and I have called the county road department to complain about the condition of our roads, and every time we get the same answer: “We will get to it,” but it never happens.
    It has us all wondering where our tax dollars are going because they are not going toward our roads being taken care of.

  • LETTER: State crew doing great job with snow removal

    To the editor:
    I just had to write to give accolades where accolades are due.
    The state highway department does a terrific job.
    On my way to work on Jan. 11, just after the snow fell, I noticed that US 127 Bypass in Anderson County was for the most part clear. There were salt trucks everywhere. Once I went over the Anderson/Franklin line it was the difference between night and day. Franklin County roads were terrible.

  • LETTER: Congress’ priorities remain out of whack

    To the editor:
    Unlike the six senseless killings in Tucson, Ariz., the senseless killings in Afghanistan get slight to no attention in the national discourse.
    Yet, 1,454 American soldiers have been killed in that 10-year war, and 499 of them were killed in 2010. Already, nine have been killed in 2011.

  • LETTER: Nothing from nothing still equals nothing

    To the editor:

    Congressman Ben Chandler’s reaction to the shooting of a US representative is that it may cause him to make fewer public appearances.

    Adding up his public showings last term, I’m wondering: How can he make fewer appearances than none?

  • LETTER: Suggestion: Give Chambers Carlson’s job

    To the editor:
    I just read [last week’s edition of] The Anderson News and I am wondering if everyone who loses their job will get a front page article about it, with the fired employee going on and on about how unfair it is.
    Mr. Chip Chambers applauded the constitutional right to run for office. The county judge-executive has the constitutional right to hire and fire the county road supervisor.

  • LETTER: Library, Chambers articles enlightening

    To the editor:
    I just wanted to let you know I enjoyed following the library story [“Spending more, taxing less,” Dec. 15 edition]. It was a great example of how our tax system works.
    The article in last week’s paper about [ousted highway foreman] Chip Chambers and the hypocrisy of local government was priceless, as well. I loved the picture of him receiving the $25 gift certificate. If only the fiscal court could be that tight with our tax money.

  • LETTER: New judge-executive will be ‘watched’

    To the editor:
    Well, well, it looks like Washington, DC, here in good old Anderson County.
    Was it pure politics when Judge-Executive John Wayne Conway praised [former highway forman Chip] Chambers, saying he was the best county highway supervisor in the state?
    Now, Conway says, Chambers just doesn’t fit in.
    I know I speak for many and, at this point, we whole- heartedly don’t think Conway fits in with “we, the people’s” agenda.

  • Library should sink some of its millions into updated computers

    To the editor:
    I use the library computers all the time. All of that money is not going toward them. They are slow, virus-ridden and recently are having a hard time opening sites, including Walmart.
    I am presuming because they are still using Explorer 6 and 7, and everyone is changing their site to Explorer 8. Or because of the now not enough 1 gibabyte of memory and only Intel Pentium 4 or Celeron processor. This may be the reason it takes 20 to 30 seconds to load pages to frequently.
