  • COLUMN: Sixth District deserves some face time, Ben

    As the nation churns over health care reform, those of us living in Congressman Ben Chandler’s district apparently aren’t going to be able to ask his thoughts on the divisive issue.

    I mentioned last week that Chandler has no town hall meetings scheduled during his August recess. It’s hard to blame him because his fellow democrats in Congress are getting shouted out of their own town hall meetings by people not ready to allow government to take over so much of nation’s healthcare.

  • COLUMN: Wooden cross issue is city’s to bear

    Column as I see ’em ...

    When word gets around that the police are giving people a 10 mph break in a 55 zone, people will drive 65.

    When they learn that they can fudge certain portions on their tax return, people will cheat.

    When parents don’t enforce a curfew, children will be delinquents.

    And when they learn that the rules at Lawrenceburg Cemetery aren’t enforced, people will break them.

    That’s the trouble with rules. Unless they are consistently enforced, they might as well be suggestions.

    Paper correct on alleged drunk driver

    To the editor:

    I applaud The Anderson News for featuring the drunk driver article on the front page several weeks ago, and I am dumbfounded by the petty-based criticism of the newspaper for putting it there.

    I recall the Carroll County school bus tragedy that burned the life out of 24 children, three adults and injured 34 more some with disfiguring burns. That indescribable tragedy was caused by a hollow-eyed [allegedly] drunk driver traveling north in the southbound lane of I-71.

  • COLUMN: Seeing through another’s lens

    When our office was downtown, I walked up and down Main Street on an almost daily basis, but I’ve never walked on Main Street like I did last Friday.

    Friday I spent basically the whole day with one of my very best friends, April, and her husband, Mitch.

    April and I go way back — to at least fifth or sixth grade. We were besties throughout middle school and high school. I was in her wedding; she was in mine.

  • COLUMN: Gardening the old fashioned way produces results

    It’s hard to believe that August is almost here.

    School starts next week. Man, whatever happened to the good old days when you started school right after Labor Day and got out by Memorial Day?

    Seems like three months off, in a row, would save a lot of money for the district. I bet capital improvement projects would be a lot smoother. And, hey, let’s not forget the students’ education.

  • COLUMN: Patience a virtue when in comes to public facilities

    “I think it’s a great idea,” my friend Katie Hilbert said when asked about a skate park. “I think it’s a good idea because, if you skate, you’re not allowed to skate anywhere else.”

    The city finally got a grant for a skate park. Work should begin on it within the next two months.

    I was glad to hear that the city received the grant, which means the county and city are becoming better for the teens.

  • EDITORIAL: Time to cut KACo down to proper size

    Remember those old cries of “Break up Ma Bell!” back in the 1980s when the monopolistic telephone company practically ran the world?

    Although breaking up the Kentucky Association of Counties might seem a bit extreme, perhaps it’s time to trim a few of its overgrown branches.

    For those living under a rock over the past month, KACo has been under almost constant attack after the Herald-Leader exposed its lavish — and at times vulgar — spending practices.
