  • Stink bugs on the rise in Kentucky fields

Certainly this is the time to be checking your soybeans for the presence of stink bugs.

I have not noticed economically important problems in the beans I have sampled, but stink bugs are certainly common and our light traps have been capturing very large numbers compared to previous years.

  • Obama golfs, attends weddings, fundraisers while ISIS crisis sizzles

    To the editor:

Soon, we as registered voters will be casting our ballots for political appointments, I would ask that you consider something.

The current Obama administration has proven to you that there is no leadership and the president proclaims to the world that … “I must consult congress because currently we have no strategy to combat ISIS (ISIL).”  While international terror confronts the minds of many, Obama is able to plan his fundraisers, weddings and other social events, including golf daily.

  • Save bucks this winter by canning your own veggies

It’s “close” outside, as Grandma would say. Close is the term she used for humid. I have no idea why, but it does feel like someone wrapped you in a damp towel. I will be glad when the humidity drops, but not the temperature.

  • City’s restaurant tax still a very bad idea

Column as I see ’em …

The old saw that when the cat’s away the mice will play is sadly all too true.

After spending years beating back the misguided notion that taxing restaurants will somehow attract tourists — who doesn’t want to pay more for food? — those bent on some kind of a weird restaurant tax caliphate quickly got up to their old tricks not long after I left this job in February for one in New Mexico.

  • Federal report gives detailed insight on expense of raising children

The USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion recently released the annual report of expenditures on children by families for 2013. It’s a 31-page report with lots of details.

Child-rearing expenses vary considerably by household income. Families who have more, will pay more. The biggest jump in expenses comes with families who have more than $106,540 annual income.

There isn’t a big difference between families who have gross income of $61,530 and those who have less than $106,540 but more than $61,530.

  • Disability or different ability? Every life is precious

When a militant neo-atheist like Richard Dawkins spouts off one of his many Darwinian talking points, I rarely give any consideration to what has been said.

His rhetoric is vitriolic, fueled by a hatred of religion, especially of Christianity. But when someone with over a million Twitter followers says something as acrimonious as a baby diagnosed with Down syndrome should not be allowed to be born, it causes me to sit up and take notice.

  • Tips to keep stable fly population under control

The stable fly is a blood sucker that looks like a house fly but has a piercing-type mouthpart that projects forward from the front of its head. Males and females feed on warm-blooded animals and humans, usually around the lower leg or ankles. They also will attack dogs, biting them mostly in the ears. Stable flies are not limited to barns and stables; they will rest around houses and attack people, too. Stable flies are strong fliers; they can cause problems at least two miles from their breeding sites.
