  • Unsolicited advice from a Type A, overachiever

I remember my first journalism class with Joseph Boyce, former senior editor of the Wall Street Journal.

One of the first things he said to us is, “the Midwest is the land of good enough.”

    I was enraged.

“Good enough? Who does he think he is,” I thought.

I was a straight A student who also worked a full-time job to pay rent and support myself. Good enough wasn’t in my vocabulary.

As the years went on, I understood the weight of his words.

  • Homemade repellents are easy

Happy June! Summer is practically here and I am loving it! Gorgeous green with bright colored flowers and gobs of gardens sprouting up food! What’s not to love?

OK, so there are a few drawbacks to summer.

When I’m driving home in the evenings and pass a newly cut lawn, I smell watermelon. It makes me so hungry. I can live with that one. The only other drawback, for me, is the bug population.

  • Instead of seeking blame for Isla Vista shootings, seek God

Elliot Rodger’s premeditated rampage of carnage in Isla Vista, Calif., wherein he killed six people before finally taking his own life, has reignited the flames of the gun-control debate in our country, which has never really died out but, instead, lie under smoldering coals of apathy until something else happens that stirs the national consciousness.

Richard Martinez, the grief-stricken father of Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, one of Rodger’s victims, pleaded for the madness to come to an end.

  • It takes a team to pull off an election

I want to take explain the involved process and people it takes to help make the Primary Election go as smooth as possible.

The election process never stops in our office. The deputies continually work to ensure that everything is ready for Election Day. The staff works daily to process voter registration information.

  • ‘Playing like a girl’ takes whole new meaning in Anderson County

We’re proud of Anderson County High School girls’ sports teams who racked up several accolades this year, giving a new meaning to the terminology “playing like a girl.”

Here are just a few of the’ teams that have performed exceptionally well this season.

Lady Bearcats basketball ranked among the top three in the state all year and as high as number one at times.

They won the region for the second consecutive year and got to the Elite Eight of the state tournament.

  • Minimum wage sucks!
  • Soon, cars will drive themselves…no, really they will

Okay, I’ll admit I’m an ‘80s kid. I grew with movies such as “Robocop” and “Total Recall.”

Do you remember in the movie “Total Recall,” where there was an automated taxi driver called “Johnny Cab” that would have entire conversations with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character?

Well, that glimpse of the future might be on point now with the new Google driverless car.

  • Try this Thai Peanut Chicken and Noodles recipe

I received several calls in response to my recent column about depression.

There aren’t any classes scheduled now but I am available to speak to your group. I think it’s more effective to meet with small groups (8-12 people) that usually know each other instead of larger groups.

Call the Anderson County Extension Office at 502.839.7271 to schedule a program on one or more aspects of depression or contact me at joan.martin@uky.edu.
