Only antidote is honest power

To the editor:
Money-purchased thievery (e.g. monopolistic drugs) and money-purchased incompetence (e.g. our $16.7 trillion debt) by greedy profiteers produce the stupid legislative outcomes in Washington (e.g. a bridge to nowhere).
For years, Speaker Boehner blamed President Obama and Senator Reid for not submitting their budgets. He should have blamed himself. He was responsible for their irresponsibility and therefore an equal party to their malfeasance.

Students receive awards at...

The Anderson County Conservation District held its annual banquet April 23 to honor students for participating in the Jim Claypool Art and Writing contest.  
“The Art and Writing contest was made possible through the hard work and dedication of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation, Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts and the Anderson County Conservation District,” according to the Conservation District’s press release.

Aleda Dianne Day, 63

Aleda Dianne Day, 63, died May 3, 2013, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
She was the daughter of the late Harlon Williams and the late Kathryn (Emmert) Williams.
She is survived by two sons, Darren Day and Jared Day and a daughter, Courtney Day.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 1 p.m. at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus, Ind.
Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery.
 

Donna Jean Hall Robinson, 55

Donna Jean Hall Robinson, 55, died Friday, May 10, 2013, at her home in Versailles.  
She was the daughter of the late Eugene Hall and Ruby Pearl Robinson Campbell.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo.
Donna is survived by two sons, Richard Lyn Royster (Jennifer) of Midway and Daniel Eugene Willard of Lawrenceburg; two grandchildren, Tyler and Tiffany Royster of Midway; a sister, Annette Campbell of Shelbyville; and three brothers, Eddie Campbell (Mamie) and Jamey Campbell (Carol), both of Lawrenceburg, and Billy Campbell (Sondra) of Sturgis.

Charles Wayne Goodlett, 50

Charles Wayne Goodlett, 50, of Lawrenceburg, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at his residence.
He was the son of the late Earl and Evelye Mae “Dolly” Stratton Goodlett. He was a member of Ninevah Christian Church, and a former maintance worker for the City of Versailles. He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Missed opportunities cost...

Anderson County needed perfection, but the Bearcats only got near that mark Tuesday night.

Collins ended Anderson's season when Dan Sanders ripped a two-out single, scoring Mason Jeffries in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Titans a 1-0 win in the 30th District semi-finals at Shelby County.

Jeffries, who had reached on a fielder's choice, easily scored the game-winner when Sanders' hit fell in.

SOFTBALL: Aldridge's gritty...

The difference between winning and losing on the softball diamond is often the little things. Never was it more apparent than Louisville Butler's 2-1 win over host Anderson County last Wednesday.

The Bearettes scored the winning run when catcher Larissa Book dropped a weak flare just out of the reach of two Anderson defenders with two out in the top of the seventh. Danielle Teague, running for Courtney Rose, trotted home with the game winner.

SOFTBALL: Anderson girls drub...

The only question about the 30th District softball opener Monday night was just how dominant Mia Aldridge really was.

The freshman pitcher overpowered Spencer County in the Lady Bearcats' 9-0 rout. Aldridge allowed just two base runners and struck out seven to led Anderson to Tuesday's district championship game. Aldridge improved to 12-1 on the year.

Anderson was to have played Collins, a 16-9 winner over Shelby County in the other semi-final, after press time.

Keeping her commitment every...

Anna-Marie Hyatt won't be mentioned in any of the Miss Softball discussions. There might be a few post-season honors over the next few weeks, but the hullabaloo about them will probably be limited to a note in this newspaper or posts on Facebook.

Even though golf is going to help pay for her college education, she never made that state tournament in that sport, missing by one stroke last fall. There have been ups and downs along the way, but one thing has remained constant.
