Avoid contracting foodborne...

Foodborne illness causes 3,000 deaths each year. About 128,000 people are hospitalized each year due to food borne illness. Although not hospitalized, about 1 in 6 (48 million) people in the United States are affected by food borne illness.
It can happen to anyone, anywhere and from foods we might not expect. Children under age 5 and adults 60 and older are at highest risk.

Column as I see ’em …
I’ve never been happier to be wrong in my life.
I screwed up royally several weeks go when I wrote an article about potential health department tax increases.
I wasn’t alone in thinking health department taxes are governed under the convoluted “compensating rate” system; even the county attorney wasn’t aware of an old statute that actually covers health taxes.
She is now, and I’m absolutely thrilled.

Student arrested for alleged...

An Anderson County high school student has been arrested for allegedly making threats against the Anderson County High School, according to news releases from Superintendent Sheila Mitchell and the sheriff’s office.
According to the sheriff’s office, a juvenile has been taken into custody on charges of second-degree terroristic threatening and intimidating a participant in the legal process.
Mitchell’s news release states that high school administration has been working with police to investigate alleged threats made by multiple students.

Brenda Kay Martin Bowen, 64

Brenda Kay Martin Bowen, 64, of Lawrenceburg, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Ruel “Bud” and Gladys Drury Martin.  
She was a member of Anderson Christian Church, Willing Workers Sunday School Class.  She was a funeral director for Gash Memorial Chapel for 27 years and an employee of L & W Emergency Equipment for nine years. She was also a former hairdresser for Curlette Beauty Shop.

It's safe to say that the 2013 baseball-softball season has been one full of surprises around Anderson County.

Not many expected the Anderson County High School softball team to be sitting at 21-9 heading into this week. Few really thought the Lady Bearcats would spend some time in the Top 25, although they dropped out last week. And not many really thought of Anderson as a legitimate threat to make its first state tournament appearance since 2008.

SOFTBALL: Lady Mustangs play...

The Anderson County Middle School softball team entered the Anderson County Lady Bearcat freshman tournament over the weekend and gave a good account. The Lady Mustangs won one game but lost two in the tourney.

Net Cats shut out in rain-...

 To say the Region 8 tennis tournament experienced a wacky week is an understatement. Saying it did not go as Anderson County had hoped is not.

The Bearcats and Lady Bearcats were shut out of state qualifiers in a week that might have been dominated by the weather more than anyone's serve or backhand. Monday's first round was delayed, delayed again, then eventually called after a few matches because of rains that threatened all week.

District begins search for...

The Anderson County school district seeks the community’s input as it begins its search to fill two principal positions for the 2013-2014 school year.
Members of the Anderson County middle school’s site-based decision-making council voted to offer an online survey for “stakeholders” — those parents, students staff and residents with a vested interest in the middle school — as the council evaluates principal candidates.

Social studies teacher elected...

Delegates to the 141st KEA Delegate Assembly elected Lisa Petrey-Kirk to a three-year term as vice president of the 42,000-member Kentucky Education Association, according to a press release.
Petrey-Kirk, a 1983 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and a National Board Certified Teacher, has taught all of her 26 years at Anderson County Middle School.

Library lawsuit moving forward,...

The lawsuit threatened two weeks ago against the Anderson Public Library has yet to be filed, but those suing say they still plan to do so.
“We’re in the developing stages and getting our briefs together,” said Harold Todd, one of those involved. “We still have some legwork to do, but we are still moving forward.”
