Master gardeners get an...

Last Tuesday a group of local gardeners took a trip to the Rising Sons Winery in Lawrenceburg where they were to learn about the maintaining of a vineyard and growing of grapes.
“Their wine was really good and we wanted to learn more about it,” Paula Mullins, a member of the Master Gardner’s and coordinator of the event, said.
“The last time I came I tried nine different wines and there was only one I didn’t like.”

Community of Promise marks 10-...

The Anderson County Community of Promise met June 4 at the Board of Education training room to celebrate its 10-year anniversary of participating in the Community of Promise Initiative under the America’s Promise for Youth Alliance, according to a press release.
The program began in May 2003 and has continued to grow over the last 10 years, the press release said.

Parents face thousands in fines...

The parents of an Anderson County public school student are facing fines in excess of $7,000 because their child missed too much school in the past year.
Darren Hockensmith, 41, and Charlotte Hockensmith, 42, of 1141 Versailles Road, Lot 14, Lawrenceburg are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Anderson District Court on a summons that claims their child had 29 unexcused absents or tardies during the recent school year, according to documents on file in the Anderson Circuit Court clerk’s office.

Two hit-and-runs are two too many

James Davis picked up a few leftover pieces of a Chevy truck off the grass.  
The broken plastic will join the rest of the property owner’s burgeoning collection: vehicles that have crashed into his house at 2046 Fox Creek Road.
The first hit-and-run accident, which occurred November 2012, left an estimated thousands of dollars in damage to Davis’ property, he said, and Davis doesn’t have insurance on the residence to pay for repairs.

Chris Evans was curious.
A volunteer with Lawrenceburg Fire and Rescue, Evans was looking out of a side window while working at the Five Star convenience store to watch workers cut the top of a large tree behind a home on Plum Drive when the unimaginable happened.
Evans said he saw a Townsend Tree Service worker cut the top of the tree while co-workers on the ground used a rope to pull the treetop away as it fell.
That’s when things went horribly wrong, Evans said.

Library denies ‘unlawful taking...

The Anderson Public Library’s board of trustees is denying nearly all of the allegations in a class action lawsuit filed last month that accuses it of “unlawful taking” and seeks hundreds of thousands of dollars in refunds to taxpayers.
The library’s attorneys filed an answer to those allegations last week, claiming “sovereign immunity” against charges of conversion and unlawful taking.

‘Operable’ grenade found near...

The last thing middle school football coach Brian Holloman expected to see Monday when he pulled into the Phoenix Academy parking lot was a grenade.
But when he got out of his truck, that’s exactly what he saw and it didn’t take long for him to call for help.
“That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a grenade,” said Holloman. “I really wasn’t scared. In my mind I was thinking is this real or a toy.
“Once I realized what it was, my next step was to call someone.”

Floy Tommie Walters Robinson, 90

Floy Tommie Walters Robinson, 90, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, in Charleston, S.C.  
She was born to the late William Edward and Margaret Jane Farris Walters.
Robinson is survived by four children, Donna Jane Woods, Charles Thomas Robinson, Sherry Ann Devlin and Carla Kay Timmis.
Funeral services were held June 4 at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
