Radio station 770 AM will host a benefit concert May 18 at 6 p.m. at Sand Spring Baptist Church for the organization Send a Kid to Kamp.

Missed opportunities cost Bearcats in season-ending loss to Collins

Anderson County needed perfection, but the Bearcats only got near that mark Tuesday night.

Collins ended Anderson's season when Dan Sanders ripped a two-out single, scoring Mason Jeffries in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Titans a 1-0 win in the 30th District semi-finals at Shelby County.

Jeffries, who had reached on a fielder's choice, easily scored the game-winner when Sanders' hit fell in.

Anderson County Scholarship Fund awards grants to 35 students

Scholarship grants for academic year 2013-14 have been made to 35 students, 32 of whom were selected by the selection committee of the Anderson County Scholarship Fund, it was announced in a news release.
The United Methodist Church Scholarship Committee of Lawrenceburg selected the remaining three students.

Box seats available for Fair and Horse Show

Box seats for the 141st annual Lawrenceburg Fair and Horse Show are now available.
The fair is scheduled for June 22-29 at the American Legion fairgrounds on Broadway in Lawrenceburg.
Box seat tickets are $75 and include four passes and reserved parking for one car for the horse show nights, which will be held Tuesday, June 25 through Friday, June 28.
“This is an attractive offer and permits you to bring family members or neighbors to the horse show at no further cost to you or your guests,” fair organizers said in a press release.

Free GED test to be offered at Learning Center

The GED test will be offered for free in Kentucky starting May 15 through July 31, according to a press release.
Starting Jan. 1, 2014, the cost of the GED test is expected to double from $60 to $120, according to Adult Education and Literacy Director Jerry Shaw. Anyone who has started the GED process needs to finish by Dec. 31, 2013, or students will lose all their previous test scores.
The new computer-based test, set to be instituted in January 2014, will include higher degrees of math and more short essays, according to Shaw.

We are safe from frost, so let the planting begin.
It is warm enough for tomatoes, peppers and all sun loving vegetables.
The strawberries are turning red, the iris are in full bloom and this Saturday I open the produce stand. In my book, that’s the beginning of summer.

Like eating? Plant more flowers to attract bees

Well, you know it’s that time of year, when just a small, black hole in a blanket makes you think tick. I shake garlic powder on the dogs’ food to help them repel critters. I also give them the drops, like Advantax. I have to check myself every time I come in from working on the farm.
And once you find one, you’ve got the heebie jeebies when anything touches your skin, like say, a thread. I know they must serve some purpose in our ecosystem, but I’m killing every one of those little parasites. Can you tell that I don’t care for ticks.

Compassionate Friends announce upcoming meetings
The Compassionate Friends will host meetings for bereavement parents who have lost children of any age.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and the third Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the hospice building, 643 Teton Trail in Frankfort.

Senior center raffling Indy 500 tickets
The cash-strapped Anderson County Senior Citizens Center is raffling off four tickets for Sunday’s running of the Indianapolis 500, the agency announced.
Raffle tickets are $25 each, and available at the senior center, located at 160 Township Square, organizers said.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The raffle includes the Woodford County senior center, as well, which will share in the proceeds.
A drawing is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m., and the winner will be notified.

Glenn Nash Wiley, 57

Glenn Nash Wiley, 57, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at his residence.  
He was preceded in death by his parents Della Ann Wooldridge and Thurston Nash “Tug” Wiley, and a sister Carol Ann Wiley.
 Glenn was a former employee of Rand McNally for 28 years, the owner of Wiley Towing in Lawrenceburg and an avid drag racer. He was a member of Ninevah Christian Church.
He is survived by a sister, Darlene Cornish; a brother, Robert Wiley; a nephew, Jody Todd Caldwell; and a niece Cretia Lewis, all of Lawrenceburg.
