Donate blood for chance to win car, tickets

Those 18 and older who register to donate blood with the Kentucky Blood Center will be entered to win a 2013 Toyota Prius, the agency announced.
Those who register will also be entered to win two tickets to see Jimmy Buffett at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati on July 16, according to a news release.
The agency will accept blood donations Tuesday, June 11 from 12:30 to 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 111 N. Main St., Lawrenceburg.
Donors are entered to win the vehicle each time they donate blood through Sept. 13.

The Anderson County Board of Education approved the following personnel actions during the May 20 school board meeting:

Reena Connelly as a teacher at Saffell Street Elementary effective the 2013-2014 school year
Gina Flygstad as yearbook sponsor for the 2012-2013 school year at Saffell Street Elementary
Heather Gordon as a teacher at Saffell Street Elementary effective the 2013-2014 school year

to hold summer gospel gathering
The Shiloh Christian Church will be hosting a summer gospel gathering June 8 at 6 p.m.
Lots of great bluegrass and country gospel music will be performed by various local musicians, according to the church’s press release.
“Join us for an evening of worship through music,” event organizers said.
Shiloh Christian Church is located at 1122 Willisburg Road in Lawrenceburg.

OUTDOORS: Archery teams have big day at national event

The Anderson County archery teams had strong showings in the National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament, held May 10 in Louisville.

Sixth-grader Brandon Aldridge earned the championship of the elementary competition, scoring 292 out of a possible 300. He was 26th overall out of nearly 9,500 archers from 40 states.

Happy June. I think I squeezed every minute out of May. I didn’t get everything done, but I never do. For some reason, I keep thinking of new projects as I play in the garden. I did get some new trees in the ground to add a little color to the front yard. The next step is to landscape the front of the house. Oh boy!

The Beatles, robots and helping people

Robots could lead lost Alzheimer’s patients to their rooms with a little help from the Beatles.
“We discovered music helped seniors regain some of their memory,” Quetzal Velasco told me at the Extension building Monday afternoon.
Quetzal is not an engineer.  She’s not an Alzheimer’s disease specialist.
She is 15, and a member of the local LEGO Legends team that programs robots through workshops (there are several coming up this summer) and competitions to help solve real problems.

Frankfort Regional receives highest rating for patient safety

Frankfort Regional Medical Center received an “A” rating for the second consecutive report on patient safety from The Leapfrog Group in its Spring 2013 report card - Hospital Safety Scores, according to a press release.  
The score reflects Frankfort Regional’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. Frankfort Regional also received an “A” rating in the previous report in November 2012, according to the press release.

Council ponders payroll tax

A rumored payroll tax being considered by the Lawrenceburg City Council is a rumor no more.
Although the council isn’t scheduled to vote on the idea of placing the tax on those who work within city limits, at least two councilmen have discussed it, including one with Mayor Edwinna Baker.
City councilman Ken Evans verified that he has discussed a payroll tax with fellow councilman Larry Giles, adding that the discussion originally surfaced during a recent Lawrenceburg/Anderson County Economic Development Authority (EDA) meeting.

Joseph Anthony ‘Tony’ Craig, 65

Joseph Anthony “Tony” Craig, 65, of Leitchfield died Monday, June 3, 2013, at Norton’s Hospital in Louisville.  
He was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Ruth Craig, first wife Carol Ridings and his son Joseph Samuel “Jot” Craig.
Tony was born in Louisville and was a former delivery driver for Glenn Toyota in Frankfort. He had a true passion for antique automobiles.
Tony is survived by his daughter, Toni Renee Craig of Lawrenceburg.
