Welcome to November.

The leaves just started to fall consistently and it’s late. Remember what that means? The later the fall, the worse the winter.

We looked at Mother Nature’s signs so I thought it might be fun to see what the National Weather Service has predicted for us this winter. Now, they don’t use squirrel tails or anthills for their forecasts.

Anderson County needs a do-over.

A do-over, that is, on the board of health’s decision to construct a $2 million building near Walmart.

For the life of me I cannot make sense of that decision, and not from the perspective of whether such a building is even needed.

Here’s what doesn’t add up: The health board, after years of contemplation and consideration of roughly 20 options, chose to swap a perfectly good public building plus $125,000 in cash for 2 acres of land near Walmart.

To the editor:

Once again my senses were pinched by a ghastly color photo of a beautiful, dead animal on the cover of [last week’s] paper.

It happens every year.

Yes, I know all the reasons. They eat the meat, it’s a sport, family activity, good for kids’ self-esteem, etc.

I completely understand and know there is an overpopulation of deer. Heck, they brought the elk in just so they could be shot at, I guess. 

As we fall deeper into our cold season, we can watch for several signs, like the “old-timers” did.

They watched their environment. I use several of these folklore forecasters. It’s fun and it’s fairly accurate. Just keep an eye on your environment.

Start watching the moon for halos. A lot of them means a lot of snow falls. Take a look at the wooly worms. They’re all over the place right now. There are several different kinds of wooly bears, and they do come in different bands of colors or even solid black.

It appears the Anderson County Fiscal Court has a line on a pile of grant money to purchase some property.

I don’t know that for a fact, but make the assumption based on statements by the judge-executive and ongoing closed-door negotiations during recent fiscal court meetings.

A month ago, Judge-Executive Steve Cornish slammed the door on what he said were ongoing rumors that the fiscal court was considering buying the current health department building once it moves into its new $2 million home near Wal-Mart. (More on that in a moment.)

I’ve learned a lot about family in the past week. It’s probably nothing I haven’t learned before, but some lessons are worth repeating.

Family may very well be the most important thing in this life since it is the first thing God gives us when we are born. But because some original families don’t live up to their potential, we continue to get opportunities to add to the group we call our family.

Where’s ‘revolt’ over sewer billing?

To the editor:

Have any citizens written opinions to The Anderson News about the sewer billing in Lawrenceburg?

I’m surprised people haven’t begun a revolt.

We live in Briar Creek and recently had to water quite a bit outside to get new grass to germinate before cold weather (we did have a dry spell in September) and I just received my water bill for the month.

Carey deserves thanks for tractor pull

To the editor:

I would like to take a moment to say thanks to Eddie Carey, the local 4-H club, the competitors and everyone else who worked so hard to put on a good truck and tractor pull.

The crowd was large, very polite and there wasn’t any trouble. It was a good time for all who attended.

I just hope we can have more of this type of entertainment in the future.

Keep up the good work, Eddie.

I love fall season for many reasons, and this month there are so many things going on. To name a few there’s Halloween, pastor appreciation month, the end of the trimester at high school(finals also), deer season, fall festivals and much more.

Halloween is a great holiday, especially for the younger kids. Even if we don’t go trick-or-treating we can still work at Autumn Splash, church trunk-or-treats or even just passing out candy for the neighborhood kids.
