  • SOFTBALL: Collins slips past Lady Bearcats in extra innings

About all that Monday's 30th District softball showdown revealed was it should be a close race between Anderson County and Collins.

Of course, most who follow the high school game already knew that and there were few surprises in Collins' 4-2 win in eight innings.

Collins pitcher Jeneca Thomas, a senior, limited Anderson to three hits and struck out five.

But Thomas also walked three and got into a pair of late-inning jams when the Collins defense, committed three errors.

  • BASEBALL: 'We had that sucker in our hands'

VERSAILLES – The only good thing about losing in 12 innings, like Anderson County did at Woodford County Saturday night, is that the baseball game was not played after Memorial Day.

Then, taking a loss after blowing a 3-run lead or stranding a potental game-winning run 90 feet from home plate would be considered devastating. Saturday, however, it was merely a setback for an Anderson team that still has designs on its fifth regional championship.

    Disappointing, certainly.

  • BREAKING SPORTS NEWS: Bearcats get past Spencer in 12

Alex Payton ripped a bases-loaded, one-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning to drive in Cole Sayre and send Anderson County to a 2-1 win over visiting Spencer County Tuesday night.

It was the second straight 12-inning game for the Bearcats. The win over a district foe was also important for the 30th District Tournament seeding race.

  • Boys' basketball: Bearcats romp past Washington

Anderson County got 18 points from Jay Smith, while Ross Cox and Lowell Gordon added 14 and 13, respectively, as the Bearcats routed visiting Washington County, 74-55, Saturday night.

Anderson trailed only once at 3-2 and took total control of the game with a 12-0 run late in the second quarter. A 17-2 outburst over 3:14 of the third quarter turned the game into a rout. Anderson led 53-38 after the uprising.

  • Owen hands Bearcats second loss

Owen County's Sawyer Williams scored 22 points and pulled down 19 rebounds as the Rebels slipped past host Anderson County, 59-50 in overtime Friday night.

Williams, ranked as high as the Eighth Region's second-best player in the pre-season, scored 18 of his points after halftime. Williams, a 6-foot-7 senior, hit 12-of-20 free throws, but hit 8-of-12 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Lexington Catholic bombs away to defeat Lady Bearcats

No matter how much the game changes, the main object of basketball has remained the same since Dr. Naismith was looking for a peach basket.

Make shots. It is still that simple.

Lexington Catholic made 11 shots from beyond the three-point line to defeat host Anderson County 60-51 in a battle of girls' basketball teams ranked in the pre-season Top 15 on Friday night.
